World book day costume and swimming has turned DS into a mini policeman. Argh!

DS (8) is going to drive me nuts tonight.
He is dressing up on World Book Day and realised today that they have swimming on that day. Cue major panic. I can't quite make out if because he is worried about getting his costume on and off (which he can do) or because it might get wet in the changing room. Either way it has completely stressed him out. All his letters he has brought home from school today about book day have 'Panic' scribed all over them.
He has turned into a mini policeman - the slightest thing I ask his younger brothers to do eg, please can you get out the kitchen whilst I am cooking, before I have even finished speaking he is screaming at them to get out the kitchen and doesn't stop until they do, which invariably they don't.

So far he hasn't liked my suggestions - why don't you take an extra bag to keep your costume dry, why don't you take your costume off before you go and keep it safe in the classroom, but as they are all changes to the norm he isn't buying it.
I am hoping to talk to his teacher about it tomorrow as I don't think I can take 2 more days of stress! Any sensible solutions?

A waterproof costume he can swim in? Jaws, maybe?

Sorry, not terribly sensible but you sound like you need a giggle.

Would he be likely to take suggestions better if they come from the teacher? Especially if they tell the whole class that they can change out of costume in advance or bring extra bag. We have sometimes found that nonsense from mum becomes wisdom when uttered by teacher.

could he wear the costume (depends when it is ) at the weekend say and put his trunks underneath as a test tell him as thats what Wink you know so n so (someone else in his class) is doing then maybe he will see going to the loo playing in it, lunch ect isnt so bad it will be ok

Al1son · 28/02/2011 18:07

Could his costume be very minimal like a hat, cloak or a tabard? Something very very easy to take on and off.

Does he have to wear a costume if it's stressing him out so much?

purplepidjin · 28/02/2011 19:04

Ok, sensible one not thought of

If swimming is in the afternoon, wear costume for morning. Before he eats lunch, change into normal uniform. Then go swimming. Adjust according to time of swimming Smile

We are having stress about this too but without the swimming! So I am feeling your pain.

Hope you can get it sorted, with one of the ideas above.

We are on our third costume as the first two were not upto ds's exacting standards.

starfishmummy · 28/02/2011 19:23

I think a word with his teacher would be a good idea - they might cancel swimming if they are doing things for world book day instead; ds's school tend to have lots of different activities and go "off timetable".

Thanks all :) It did take several weeks of stressing before we found a costume that he wanted to go as.
I have finally found out the problem. He is going as Reepicheep the mouse from Narnia, mouse costume is nearly finished, but I haven't got as far as putting the leather strap over his shoulder down to his waist. As he hasn't tried that bit of the costume he didn't know if he would be able to get it on and off for swimming. So, some practice should solve the problem :)

And purplepidjin thanks for your first comment I needed some light relief Grin.

Back to the sewing machine...

Well, when he gets to swimming, he can be Reepicheep jumping off the Dawn Treader to swim to Aslan's country Grin

Your DS has impeccable taste Wink

OMG, this is when I realise that Dd3's Tracy Beaker obseession is actually helpful at times!!

No prizes for guessing who she is going asSmile

I hope your liitle man copes with all the extra stress, the whole changing for swimming is bad enough without book day costumes to contend with bless him.

We saw Ruthless ROmans at the weekend - DS is going as a roman emperor. His toga will be a colourful blend of DH's t shirt (yes he only has one as he never wears them!) and my cheap pashmina type scarf. I have realised today that the xmas gift bag - destined to be cut up for his laurel crown has holographic "happy Christmas" all over it. (but hoping no one will notice when it's made!)
