We had an ENT appt today - thank goodness we did not have to wait three hours to be seen like last time ( although I did pack enough for an overnight stay almost in case it came to another long wait.

We were looking at the possibility of grommets for dd1 - well we went from possibly having grommets to having tonsils and adenoids out, along with checking ear canal once cleared of wax under g.a. and then possibly insert grommets....

So was a little shocked as I had hoped to avoid surgery but dd1 has ginormous tonsils... they are soooo big!!

Even more shocked to be told the surgery would be before Christmas as she has actually been on the waiting list since April/May time I think and they just keep putitng it back after the last couple of appts when they decided to wait and see..... so that means overnight stay with the surgery, no contact with children en masse for two weeks as well as not being able to really leave town for those two weeks in case she has a bleed!!!!

BUT - we have swimming and kindy and WIGGLES tickets for sold out concerts that we have been waiting ages to come up!!!!

OKAY - I know this is best for her. Her hearing today was registering in the moderate hearing loss range and with the improvements she is doing with her language and speech would not want her to be hindered by her hearing...... I just hoped that as we had managed to avoid this before we would continue to..

tell me it really is for the best for her... Funny - I did not worry this much when she was having her heart surgery but now I wish she did not have to have it.....

Okay rave over - just being silly.

the Wiggles will still be touring every year even when they are in wheelchairs

You know it's for the best, she has to have them done before pre-school doesn't she, so now is the time

It sounds as if you have had ent problems for quite a while. I know you are in Australia as I have seen other threads. They don't tend to take tonsils out these days unless really think necessary. If your daughter is suffering from some hearing loss as a result of these issues it is so vital to sort her out now. My dd1 and ds1 have both had grommets and ds1 had adenoids out. These ops are very fast and recovery within a couple of hours. I did witness some kids having tonsils out during these hospital trips and will admit they seemed to find it a bit tougher afterwards. I think op is quite quick but most tend to suffer a bit of pain and vomiting after. Children are very resilient though. swimming and kindy can wait. Sorry to hear about the wiggles - I am trying to buy those tickets and can't get them.

Heh love, don't know about tonsils, but DD had her adenoids out and has had grommets fitted and both procedures went fine with a quick recovery time.

Eidsvoid - my two eldest had tonsils out as well as adenoids and grommits. The eldest had huge tonsils (the surgeon said the largest he'd seen in a child that age). The surgery made a massive difference to them both.

Dd also had problems but as she has a heart issues (only a partial repair) and is at risk under GA we didn't go ahead. Her tonsils weren't actually that big though and had they been I may have made a different decision. I understand how you feel - I think with the heart surgery the decision somehow isn't yours to take is it? You have little choice, but to electively put them through surgery is different.

Hope it doesn't interfere with your plans too much - maybe she won't come to the top of the list before Christmas. It's great that she has such I good social life!

Blimey, I was going to write the exact same thread (apart from the Wiggles) as we had our appt with ENT consultant on Monday to decide whether DD needs tonsils/adenoids out. She does and has been on the waiting list since May but had some time to see if it improved. The Consultant has decided to operate and they offered me a date NEXT WEEK!!!!! Half term so I said no, apart from being freaked out by the speed and needing to make arrangements for DS. I agreed to the week after but I'm going to put it back a couple of weeks because of DS and DH needing to be around. DD also has ginormous tonsils!
I was told we need to have some sort of booking appt a couple days before then stay in the night before the op and she will have sleep study and maybe the night of the op but we live VERY near the hospital so hoping we'll be able to go home that day. NO MENTION of avoiding other children, crowds etc. I'll ask about that and let you know what the advice is here Eidsvold.

be intrigued to see what they say Davros. I know wiggles will still be touring forever. Just that her little friend, friend's mum, dd1 and I were going - kind of an early Christmas present.

Potty dd1 has had a full repair and then another for a residual hole so now need to have antibiotics before any procedure... which is a little worrying.

Thanks for all reassuring me - am sure it will all be fine and we will see much improvement in her speech and hearing - then I know she is just ignoring me when I ask her to do something or stop doing something rather than not being able to hear me....

Eidsvold - oh yes the big 'E'! Puts the blimmin fear of God into me.

I had an interesting conversation with dd's cardio with regards to badly infected/septic tonsils being a rare source of Endocarditis and also on the other hand, the fact that the tonsils protect from chest infections to some extent by preventing the bugs from getting further down. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't

scaryclary · 19/10/2005 13:48

eidsvold, don't know if this is any help but my sister's dd has DS and she had grommets fitted at maybe about yr dd's age (? 3-4-ish) adn the improvement in her speech has been amazing she is so much clearer and has so much more to say, it's as if someone turned on a tap and all these fabulous words came flooding out.

eidsvold · 19/10/2005 22:15

Potty - according to the ent consultant - there really isn't an increase in chest/throat infections after having tonsils out - provided they have a healthy immune system - I guess dd1 has never had a bout of tonsilitis - so perhaps we will be lucky there.
