What does jargon mean in the world of SALT?

Just had DS2's first SALT assessment report and have also been looking at DS1's Asperger diagnosis. I just can't work out what they mean by using jargon. In DS2's assessment she asked me 'does he use jargon?' and I looked blank but didn't get a v satisfactory answer.

Is it the jabbering/wittering on that isn't actually English and isn't translatable? If so, how do we know that's not actually English but with the phonics all wrong? Or have I got it all wrong?

Yes, its the jabbering. I guess if a child is not speaking in sentences but comes out with lengthy jabbering it would be obvious that it was jargon

Quite possibly! He had a whopping lang delay at three much improved now at nearly seven but still residual social issues. So still hanging out on here till they throw me out :)

Oh have a Wine with me thenGrin.
I used to be Bouquets of various things LOL. My DS1 is just 6 and was DX'd with AS at 3. His pre-school and Reception teacher worked miracles and he's pretty much the least hassle of all my kids these days. DS2(2.5) has some lang delay so we are back in the system again. Allowing a very rare moment of self-pity and Envy of my postnatal club's kids tonight, hence the need to be around those who understand.
ThanksSmile.

oooo, useful I didn't know that was the SLT phrase for it, (my ds does it all the time) anyone elses dc sings in jargon?

lovely 'songs' with verses and choruses, but all the 'words' complete rubbish. Confused Grin

its that made up language they use when they are learning to talk at very young age, but should have grown out of. DD2 uses it alot when shes playing, will just mutter stuff to herself that make no sense.

Chundle · 28/02/2011 11:21

i always wondered what it meant - DD1 (whos 6 now) did this lots lovely singsong jargon however DD2 who is 18 months has no jargon at all, the few words she says she pronounces well but she does not do the whole jargon jibber jabber thing, and she never properly babbled and when she did a little bit it wasnt until 12 months. Do all kids do this?? Or do i just have a quiet one?? Her hearing is fine.

weirdly enough dd2 didnt start doing it till she bwas 3

ds started after his speech stopped progressing, he has 'jargoned' Wink for 2.5 years from 18 months to 4 years, just starting to add proper some proper words, (4.5) (ASD and LD btw)

Chundle I'm not sure my Aspie DS1 did it much either, his words were v clear when they did come out and were usually cut straight from whatever cartoon he was into. He was a big fan of Little Einsteins on Nick Jr so there was a lot of 'Accelerando!' and 'Crescendo' or 'I'm gonna kick your ass Yugiyoh' type thing but nothing very useful LOL.
