My 3 year old ds with ASD and virtually non verbal has been walking into the kitchen on and off all day pointing his arms to the air and shouting "nerk". I have no idea what he wants - I've tried everything, if he does it all day tomorrow I'll be in the mad house. Is it wine time yet?

Drink, biscuit, something he likes to eat? It's really positive though because he is communicating, once you figure what it is you and he will have made huge strides. Whatever it is reward him every time he uses it (I broke biscuits into tiny pieces when dd could ask for more to reinforce that more got her more so to speak)so that he knows communication is worth the effort.

It's not a biscuit because he calls that a "git" - we've been through everything and I've still no idea!

Does he want lifting onto the side to play in the sink? It's so frustrating hough isn't? My ds just used to shout out numbers and expect me to know what they meant Confused

SilkStalkings · 27/02/2011 20:16

Does he definitely want anything or could it just be self-expression and demanding applause kind of thing?

asdx2 PMSL at the numbers. DS1 used to shout the numbers 1-4 in random order to demonstrate his disatisfaction with the worldGrin.

My ds shouts random things-he also says things that are hard to translate and repeats them time and time again(getting more and more frustrated)

Do you think he is actually asking for something-in ds's world , 'nerk'could mean 'look' or 'drink'(I expect you've tried those)-

I find repeating things along with ds sometimes works (or saying things that sound similar to what he is saying )- It's a real guessing game and I'm with you in the mad house on many days!

luckily ds's speech has improved a bit and this is happening less

Haha I totally get you! In my ds case he'll say I want him! Him could be a toy, a person, a drink etc etc lol... I was glad he did this once in front of the sen behaviour specialists... They couldn't work out anything either

hanaka88 · 28/02/2011 05:41

Have you tried lifting him up and saying 'show me'? You probably have and it never works for me but that's all I can suggest :(

cwtch4967 · 28/02/2011 08:47

Got it!!! He wants the phone which we keep on top of the fridge. No idea why he has called it "nirk". He has just got very interested in the phone and likes to babble rubbish to whoever I'm talking to - ok when it's family and friends but not serious calls!!! He's still going to drive me mad asking for it (I hold it to his ear and he says "hilo" then I have to put it back).

well doneSmile

I was like this with my ASD son. When he was 3 he spent days saying "uh uh or ick ohyo". It took 2 days to get him to 'show me'. Turns out he was saying "just one more pickled onion" !! He still doesn't like sweet stuff, only savoury!

:) glad you got it.
