Buggy advice wanted - ASD 3yr old

DS is 3 with GDD and ASD - he has almost outgrown his standard stroller and I need advice on what to do next. DS can walk well but often refuses to budge especially when in a strange / busy place so we need something as a back up for family days out etc.
We had an OT appointment yesterday and were told that the wheelchair service are no longer providing the Maclaren Major (which would have been ideal) but that we could have a wheelchair. I don't know what to do - do I just go out and buy a Maclaren or is there another option ??
Does anyone use a wheelchair - opinions / experiences wanted?

DS is 3 with ASD - similiar problems with getting him around. We were prescribed a Mac Major which we got in december. I can honestly say it's been a godsend, gives him his own portable safe space. Not sure if experience helps you though.

Could you try the wheelchair and have the idea of buying the mac major as a back up if it doesn't work out?

Also ebay often do reasonably priced S/h ones

We use a Mountain buggy for dd2 (almost 5), we also had a jane powertrack which was big enough to hold dd1 when she was 6.

We use a baby jogger elite and a mountain buggy for dd2 who is 3 and half.
A find got a Mac buggy from a charity if thats somethign you could consider.

We have a special tomato 3 wheeler which is fab (DS is 4 but his 6 year old NT brother leaps in it whenever he gets the chance). My sister got it for us in the States as its cheaper there but I know a few companies import them. Not cheap though.

Hello everyone,I have also been looking for a bigger pushchair for my dd.Sorry cwtch,i dont mean to overtake your thread! But as i read 2 of the models i have been looking at mentioned on here,i was wandering if i could ask, marne,is the jane powertrack any good and would it be suitable for my tall 6year old?
Also agnes, how do you find the special tomato,is it very big and bulky? and how small does it fold. I have also been thinking of getting my SiL to send me it from the US...how much were the postage charges? It is almost half price there!
Thanks again

The Jane powertrack is great (very easy to push), not sure if it qwould fit a large 6 year old, it depends if he will be comfortable having his feet up on the foot plate (plenty of room in the seat unit though).

cwtch my ds used mclaren major until age 7 he's 10 now. He has wheelchair now (from age 7), to be honest i preferred buggy only because its much lighter for getting in n out of car also folds into umbrella style. Having said that had buggy not been available when i got it i'd have taken wheelchair to try, at end of day you can then Sad buy your own buggy if you feel it would be handier for you, then at least you'd have wheelchair for future when ds outgrows buggy :). So long as you can get out & about any wheels are better than none :)

We have this one

DS saw it in Halfords, adored it so we saved up and bought it.

He is a tall 3.10 year old with ASD.

The great features are that he can't do the thing of dragging his feet on the floor, ruining shoes and that the hood (can't see it it the pic) comes practically all the way down so he can block out the things that distress him whenever he wants.

It's also brilliant to steer and easy to fold.

We're looking at a Major in years to come but for now this one is fantastic.

tiredmummyneedswineandsleep · 25/02/2011 20:18

my ds is and has ASD. He is the size of a 5year old and we use a baby jogger city mini too. have had people ask what brand, model it is etc.

it's lightweight and folds with one hand!

Mists · 25/02/2011 20:22

It's amazing isn't it?

I am very stupid and avoided pushchairs like this for ages because I didn't know about Buggy Clips and wondered where i would put my shopping Blush

sneezecakesmum · 25/02/2011 20:28

mini city baby jogger.! Big and room, easy to steer, folds tiny one handed, light. And big big hood when children want to hide from the world!

Try ebaby, charities?

sneezecakesmum · 25/02/2011 20:28

EBay - ebaby more appropriate though Hmm

Mists · 25/02/2011 20:33

I'd love to travel smoothly around in the Mini City Baby Jogger with the hidey hood myself Blush

tiredmummyneedswineandsleep · 25/02/2011 20:45

def agree mists! we got through lots of buggys (some broken by ds tantruming) and lots of scuffed shoes before I discovered it 11 months ago. I love it and so does DS.

Marne · 25/02/2011 21:01

Just found this on e-bay (if anyone lives near by), looks like a great pushchair, i have seen one being used on the beach before and it looked easy to push.

cwtch4967 · 26/02/2011 09:44

Thanks for all the helpful info. I really like the Mini City Baby Jogger - the hood is fab! Ebay here I come.........

depneding on how tall yu LO is, the city mini elite is imo better :)

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 26/02/2011 10:09

here

amma66 · 26/02/2011 11:00

marne - thank you,i have been looking at the 'nurse dakar'which is the same as the jane but i think built here. I am still in two minds because dd often sits curled up on the sit anyway ....she needs 'her zone', my problem is her weight is becoming too much for old m&p aria to bear and for me to negogiate.
cwtch -my dd has similar problems but my wheelchair services have said no to any help.I have heard that some services will give you the money to buy the pushchair yourself?

Marne · 26/02/2011 17:40

We had the nurse dakar, its the same as the jane powertrack but without the hand break (and a lot cheeper), the strength of the back rest could be an issue. I know a few people who use the old style mountain buggy with the hamock (sp) style seat for their sn child. We are using the mountain buggy urban but dd's head now hits the hood (there was more room in the jane). I'm looking out for a Mac major for the summer, dd2 walks a lot more but if we go out for the day its a lot easier to have a buggy.

Mists · 26/02/2011 18:00

...and now I want a city mini elite after having watched a demo Envy

lisad123 does it also have the big pull-down hood? Brilliant to know there's something else out there for DS when he's bigger Smile

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 26/02/2011 20:07

yes Mists it has a 3 part hood, comes right over, its fab. It has adjustable handle which we always need and you can fix the front wheel in place when walking over woods with our doogy :)

Mists · 26/02/2011 20:25

That'll be the next one then. Thanks Smile
