For my 3 years old dd who is too young to not chew the tablets...

I have called everywhere and it seems it does not exists! I was so hopefull that her nigh-wtaking problem would be over, especially since I am giving birth next week.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. THat being said, if anyone can recommand a brand, please let me know :)

there is a make you can get via the hosp pharmacy called kidnaps liquid melatonin hopefully yr local pharmacy might be able to order it? another thing ive heard is people using a pestle and morter to make a paste with a drop of milk then add it to a bottle of milk also you can get smaller tiny version of the tablets too

bettyboop63 · 24/02/2011 17:55

forgot to say its by NuPharm laboratories Ltd

KatyMac · 24/02/2011 17:56

Would anything liquid be 'slow release'? I though that was for tablets only

Sorry, that isn't helpful is it Blush

Phlebas · 24/02/2011 18:00

we have kidnaps but it isn't extended release - I've never heard of a liquid extended release preparation & tbh I'm not sure how it would work Confused

growlybear · 24/02/2011 18:10

Pretty sure that a liquid would not be slow release you would probably have to either speak to the person who prescribed it or your gp.The prescription will have to be changed as pharmacy will not dispence it if it is wrong.

bettyboop63 · 24/02/2011 18:21

no i dont think they do slow relese its either Immediate release formulations may be more effective in inducing sleep, sustained release formulations may be better for maintenance of sleep.

WasUnderThirthy · 24/02/2011 18:45

I know it does not make much sense to have a liquid form be slow release, I am not a chemist or anything but...It was prescribed by a Dr working with a neuro in a high-profile hospital...

We were given liquid form 'Kidnaps' and it only delayed dd 3.7 night wakening for an hour I would be very interested in hearing if you manage to locate a slow release version in liquid as I thought it was just in tablets and it would be hugely helpful in our house.
I stopped giving the melatonin as felt it was wrong to medicate for only gaining an extra hour-it was also hellish getting her to take it as she refuses to take medicine

lilbod · 24/02/2011 19:50

DS (2) was prescribed melatonin for frequent night waking, when we went back to the paed and everytime he was still the same she kept upping the dose, but that result would always be the same, he would go to sleep lovely but not stay asleep.
DS is now on 6mg on a night, recently we have been giving him 3mg when he goes to bed, then when he wakes at around 2am we give him the other 3mg, thus replicating the modified release capsules.
Yes it is still a bit of a bugger that he wakes in the night but at leaset we don't have to get up with him, and he settles quite quickly after a quick drink and a reasurring cuddle.

Bonkerz · 24/02/2011 19:53

it is a nightmare to get hold of as it is generally special order because it is not licensed in this country in liquid form or for children. We have just moved onto tablets but DS has been on melatonin for over 2 years now. I dont think the liquid is slow release though. I was told the liquid would give DS a hit that would go quite quickly and he is now on tablets which are slow release and easier to get hold of but GP wont prescribe them for children!

bettyboop63 · 24/02/2011 20:00

it didnt keep him to sleep as was the immediate relese version but it works better overall to get thesustained takes longer to work but keeps them asleep ad doeses can be changed over a time obviously esp if younger start at lower end then grad increase but like everything some things work better for some than others i think its better to start with the tiny ones and make your way up to the larger type but thats just IMHO

WasUnderThirthy · 24/02/2011 20:09

hotmama, for us the 3mg melatonin saved our life as it would take her 2 hours to go to sleep, she has no problem taking the tablets, we call them vitamins and give them at the same time as the flinstones vitamins.

lilbod, we did give her another dose if she woke up between one and two, but for some reason it would not work...maybe its a routine thing also. Its good that you found a solution that works for your dc.

i thought melatonin from all ive read is not licenced anyway? at least all the things i read before starting on it said that maybe what ive read was old post / research i dont know?

WasUnderThirthy · 24/02/2011 21:50

I don`t know if that is what you mean (I am French Canadian), but here you can buy it over the counter or have it prescribed (for insurance purposes, I think...)

no here in uk only on px wasunderthirty

wraith · 25/02/2011 03:52

how can you have a liquid slow release it would have to be almost nano capules absorb then break down and that tech akaik is 15 years off

davidsotherhalf · 25/02/2011 09:39

my dd is 17 now and she takes the kidnaps melatonin it's the only brand that works for her we have tried all the other brands but it's unlicenced and you have to get a special prescription to get it only certain doctors are allowed to sign for it we have to get the camhs doc to apply to hospital for prescription for them to send to hospital pharmacy and they have to order it in and send it to camhs by post and we get a phonecall about 6 weeks after the request for meds and pick it up. but kidnaps works

DerangedSibyl · 25/02/2011 09:41

There isn't a slow release melatonin in liquid form, it doesn't exist.

however, I can vouch for kidnaps - it DOES work, there is a noticable difference between ds1 hav9ing it and not having it.

I have been told that if Ds1 wakes bvefore 2am, I can dose him again. (which I do)

Gotabookaboutit · 25/02/2011 17:21

Agree does not exist in liquid form

bettyboop63 · 25/02/2011 18:36

its either Immediate release formulation ( more effective in inducing sleep)or sustained release formulation ( better for maintenance of sleep).
as i said earlier its Kidnaps made by NuPharm laboratories Ltd but you can get smaller (quite tiny) tablet form so easier to swallow both available in uk on PX but if in usa or canada available over the counter
