my DS has a brace (removable) but as we were saying on another thread the other day DS hates brushing his teeth and taste of toothpaste took a long time to find a particular toothpaste he doesnt like but will actually have in his mouth, he had a brace fitted a year ago theis is now the second one and no matter what i do i cant get him to wear it what his teeth will look like in years to come is of no consequence to him he can only work on what happens in the next hour at a stretch, ive tried bribery and coruption lol ive no idea i think the orthodontist not very happy so ATM hes given DS a 6 month break from it as nothings working, it was bad enough on monday at the dentist he woudlnt open his mouth then created merry hell when she put the floride on his back teeth, when he had the brace done he was screaming and crying as you have to keep the mould in your mouth for about 60 seconds he hated the taste and feel of that too he was gagging.

It's hard isn't it - we can just about clean ds's teeth (dry brush) and the dentist has not been able to do anything other than a quick look.

In some ways, here I can feel for your son. I tend to gag when impressions have been done too - breathing through the nose is supposed to help if you can get him to do that.

ty , any ideas now hes got the brace of how to get him to wear the bloomin thing, he says its uncomfortable and feels funny unless loose when loose its not doing the job though of moving the teeth so he unbeknown to me keeps taking it out and leaving it in strange places i keep spending hours looking for it found it in the linen basket the other day lol i think hes hiding it, he needs train tracks after this but that will be better as he cant take them out himself, if we ever get past this stage that is

no as he needs the front teeth which are sticking out at a great angle straight before one can be fitted as they do a diff job IYSWIM the mould part was awful and now he just makes excuses why he cant put it in inc reasons for taking it out and when he does wear it takes it out whenever he wants found it under the duvetat bottom of the bed the other day we spend much more time looking for it than him ever wearing it Sad rewards ect dont work for him he cant look ahead and the only thing he loves is choc i dont really want to encourage that as its to do with his teeth seems wrong

you can't get him used to wearing it loose and then tighten it gradually? just wondering as you said he'll tolerate it loose

I am utterly amazed that DD2 has worn her brace properly. She too can't do minty toothpaste, not good with food/tastes/textures.

What helped her was a cousin who should wear her brace but doesn't and DD actally being better than someone else for a change.

That and cash bribery.

is it one of those invisible braces?
ds hasn't been to the dentist for ages but yesterday we looked at his teeth together in the mirror and I showed him how they were starting to stick out etc. He qualified for an NHS brace over a year ago but won't go back to the dentist, although now he's said that he'll have a try. We also use a dry brush - the collis curve ones and also fuzzy brushes. I'm really hoping he'll go for a brace this time. In fact I'm really hoping he'll actually go to the dentist ....

Sorry to hijack but what are the brands of non-minty toothpaste that people are finding their kids will tolerate. TIA

bettyboop63 · 24/02/2011 19:45

unfortunately no its not like a fixed brace its either tight ,so works, or totally loose and does nothing its just a coil Sad

my ds used to like the strawberry one with disney characters (colegate i think) when he was little its when he got too old for that and needed grown up tooth paste he really disliked ittook over 2 years to find he doesnt mind asdas own , as its mild minty flavour(id rather i were a better brand) but hey im just grateful i dont have to physically clean them for him now except when we are going to the dentist as he doesnt do them really great he got better after a tiny filling but now i have t remind him (feel guilty) that if he doesnt he will either have tohave a filling or false ones like nanny used to , then with a bit more moaning he usually goes n does it hes 10 btw hopefully he will start to understand in the end without threats of you will end up all gummy like nanny used to be Confused

ds used to use aquafresh when he would tolerate toothpaste as it's not too strong.
