Disabled child is for life

Does the government not realise a disabled child is for life not just Christmas.
Don't they realise we would not claim DLA if it was not needed, bringing up a disabled child costs 3x the amount of a 'normal'child.
Don't they realise that perhaps some of us would liked to have a 'normal'life, but that is never going to happen.
So we make the best of life and don't let the b--- grind us down.

But the government likes to make us grovel
for every little bit of help we need.
I've had my moan now,
night night don't let the bed bugs biteSmile

I agree. I would happily be in receipt of my former salary as a nursing sister instead of the £200 per month Carer's Allowance, I can tell you!! Nursing is flexible? No, it isn't. I CANNOT be on a ward at 0730....I can no longer work nights....I have to do a job between 0915 and 14.30 because my son has a shortened school day......

My son required very little sleep and though bright, and a good communicator, he is not safe to be left alone due to self-harm issues.

And we have justify ourselves over and over again for every bit of help we get. I get Carers and he gets DLA. We have a Blue Badge. That's it.

Yes, it makes you laugh, when your earnings are capped to £80 ish a week to get carers allowance.
I don't think they cap your earnings that low to receive help with child care?

Agree. The carer's limit was about £95 a week when I last got it. I was gutted when my new job (as a TA between 9 and 12) took my pay to £105 per week and I suddenly lost £200 a month, gained about £100 a month and was working longer hours! Go figure. But the job of supporting a boy with ASD was just perfect and school hours and term time only. I wish they did some sort of graduated reduction. It was tempting not to take the job!

Ah so true.

UC will amke things worse.

I am supposed to do my teahcer training in 2012 as an effort to get off benefits; DH was going to work PT from home for one year. Under new rules AFAICS me studying will disallow us from any financial help under UCs: therefore I cannot do it, we have to eat.

I want to work. I aheva degree, I will ahve an MA in a relevant subject.... am I supposed to beg for the chance to NOT claim?

EllenJane1 · 22/02/2011 19:25

I apologise for my ignorance but what are UCs?

Lokovatoress · 22/02/2011 19:36

Scram, I 've been in this situation and it looks like I am headding there...
As soon as we start climbing up and getting somewhere, they shake us off so we slide down to the bottom of hell again. It seems that they really want us to move out to Mars somewhere.

Lokovatoress · 22/02/2011 19:37

I guess UC is Universal Credit - the big idea from the govenment to cut the benefits

EllenJane1 · 22/02/2011 19:41

Thanks Lokovatoress.

From ewhat I can see, it's worth a shot as our claim will start before 2013 and I will finish two months in, hopefully before they get to us (phased in over a decade apparently- just beenr eaidng white apper, it's 90% rhetoric though and only 10% actual info).

The joke is, ds1 and ds3 are both registered disbaled; ds4 has some signs too. We could technically both claim CA and give up entirely; instead we are trying to find a way to both earn.

I've been working towards this for almost a decade; got through finals with a five week old ds4, only got dissertation before I ahve an MA in Autism....... I reckon best plan is to start course then walk out if I have to, rather than not try.

its the same with the reduction in council tax you have to tell them every year that the disabled person still needs a n adapted room[doh no i magically cured them] and they still live in the house,

also after they are 18 there is a legal form that the doctor has to sign to allow them to get any operations and dental work done[the form is only for people that cant answer corectly for themselves]this can only be signed when the person is present and can be seen to still be disabled.

Yeh i love the council one too what a waste of time and money that one is.We get that one Twice a year.

wraith · 23/02/2011 05:11

i do love how this gov is waging war on the poor and defenceless.

but ontopic why can they not just accept that someone with lifelong conditions doesnt tend to change every couple of years

ScramVonChubby · 23/02/2011 09:29

I'm not defenceless, my hurdles are bigger is all.

I hope.

The gates may be puslling up but I'm polishing my battering ram

aLegonEachCorner · 23/02/2011 09:59

That's good, ScramVonChubby.

Unfortunately, my son is described in his Statement as "a very vulnerable child". I can't imagine that he will ever be able to mount those hurdles without a lot of help. I won't be here forever. That keeps me awake at nights and is one of the few things that causes me to cry, unprovoked as it were.

As long as I'm here, he'll be cared for. Beyond that, I'm scared. Do you think the Govt understands that one?

ScramVonChubby · 23/02/2011 10:39

Ah now, I ahve 2 very vulnerbale ds's so I completely get that (our situation: Ds1, AS, severe aggression and eating disorders; ds2 dyspraxia; ds3 severe autism; ds4 officially NT but clearly going to be on spectrum as well).

It's me that is not defenceless: boys are to greater and lesser extents absolutely.

But for myself I dislike being called defenceless partly BECASUE it takes away from what the boys face, if that makes sense?

And whatever you do please don't take me as a government supporter: anything but. I think they DO get it mind- I just don't think they give a damn.

Based on the alwws of capitalism, a widening poor-rich gaps means greater spoils for the richest due to greater competition amongst teh poorest for survival; those who cannot compete get forgotten. That is where we are headed.

Dying is the moment I let my boys down; I know that ultimately I fail them.
