Hi can anyone tell me if it is appropiate for me to give a copy of my sons statement to his 1 to 1 teacher. In a recent annual review i offered to do a copy of his statement and give it to his 1 to 1 teacher and the senco, quite abbruptly. told me that this was very inappropiate, also that the IEP would be reviewed every year from now on and not every term due to my son doing well in class..Any help or advice would be greatfully appreciated,thanks..

This would raise alarm bells for me.

Of course his 1:1 should see his statement! (Not that we have a statement - just seems like common sense to me)

And it's 'best practice' for IEPs to be reviewed every term....

Ds's annual review is normally around March time and his statement and IEP are discussed with us/teachers/salt. He has an IEP for each term.

I would imagine that Ds has a 1 - 1 teacher because he is statemented so this would seem off - her input would be important in assessing his needs and progress surely(?) and as Indigo says "raise alarm bells"; sounds odd.

Ask SENCO to explain why 1 - 1 teacher is excluded from this information sharing x

I think dd2's 1:1 has access to her statement through the SENCO (a s the SENCO has a copy).

tabulahrasa · 21/02/2011 19:41

I'd imagine she was objecting to you doing a copy rather than the 1:1 having a copy from the school - at least I'd hope so Hmm

and yep it is best practice for IEPs to be reviewed (even if it's briefly) every term

tryingtokeepintune · 21/02/2011 19:51

Check SEN COP - I think it is stated there that IEPs should be reviewed twice a year, at least(5:53), ideally termly .

Your local authority might have different guidelines though. Ours states that IEPs should be reivewed 3 times a year.

Maybe she thinks it is an ANNUAL education plan and not an individual education plan.

Besides the above advice, you could perhaps ask what information the 1:1 is working from. Have to admit is sounds odd to me.

coff33pot · 21/02/2011 20:19

If the school are helping him with issues and he is 1 to 1 surely they would need a copy of the statement to go by and improve his help needs??? odd. I would just outright ask why not?

GoodDaysBadDays · 21/02/2011 20:28

It is also my understanding that IEP's should be reviewed every term.

If your ds is doing well (which is excellent Smile) then his current targets can be signed off as achieved and new ones set. A great move forward! If he is doing well and has achieved his targets then what is the 1:1 worker working towards with your ds?

Can I ask why you offered to give the 1:1 a copy of the statement? Do you feel she does not understand your ds's needs? Is not meeting them?

I would imagine she should have access to his statement through the school if necessary but that possibly she should be supported and informed well enough by the SENCO/teacher/IEP that she shouldn't actually need to see it iyswim.

It does sound as though there is something not right here

sammyboyo · 21/02/2011 21:02

It came up in conversation that my sons 1 to 1 had not seen the statement so i offered to give her a copy of it in front of the senco teacher. Why she has not seen it i do not no, thank you for all your advice

Well I don't know if it is an issue in itself that she hasn't seen it, but I think there may be other issues that you need to discuss. Maybe ask for a meeting with SENCO?

Do you have someone, maybe at your LEA, who you are happy and confident getting specific advice from about what you should expect from the school?

Personally, I like to be armed with facts before I head into something I'm unsure of!

Good luck, it does sound as though your ds is doing well though which is fab!

Seems very strange to me, surley the 1:1 needs to know what's contained in the statement if she is a key person in delivering provision?

starterfor10 · 22/02/2011 09:33

They are working off the IEP so it is more important for the 1:1 to have the IEP.

Thanks for all your comments. We feel totally armed with information now.I think the senco thought we would just sit back and let them get on with it, oh no. Thanks again to you all.

I am a 1:1 teaching assistant, I have a file of all my child needs, from initial statement to all annual reviews, and OT reports I am also involoved in his IEP's each term, For me I would be unable to carry out my job to the best if I dont have this information.

Yes she does prepare work for the other children and help around the class, and most of the other mums have said they thought she was a class room assistant. It is difficult because we want him not to be reliant on his 1 to 1 but we feel a bit cheated that she is seen as a classroom assistant,
