What do you do when you need to go to the GP or Dentist in half term and theres no one to look after your dc's? I have 2 abcesses (one each side of my mouth), have phoned the dentist asking if they could give me antibiotics without seeing me, they said 'not today as your dentist is not here', they wanted me to go in tomorrow but i cant as i have 2 ASD children with me (who would have a field day with all the drills and picks). Dh has today off but we have family fund coming and no appointments anyway Sad. I have no one who can/will watch the dd's.

I'm in pain and grummpy, sorry for the rant but its times like these you realize you have no friends and your family is useless.

Oh Marne sorry you're in pain and have no one to help. Do you have a GP who understands your circumstances? In that situation my GP would prescribe antibiotics without me needing to be seen because she does know what life is like.

sumum · 21/02/2011 09:30

Poor you. Where abouts in the country are you?
I would look after them for you if you are nearby. I am in nottingham.

auntevil · 21/02/2011 09:37

Totally get your situation. And the worse thing about not having anyone to be able to call on in an emergency is that you will end up suffering in pain because you want to care for your DCs and keep them safe.
I would ask for a GP call out/or to prescribe pain relief to collect - until you can get in on your own. Our GPs has a phone manned at certain times for 'telephone' dx. They would rather prescribe sometimes than come out and visit Hmm
It's one of those 'life sucks ' days for you today, sorry Sad

I am so sorry to hear this and just say I know that feeling. I'm too far away to be of practical help.

When I have had abcesses I take ibuprofen and paracetamol alternatively (so as to be constantly "topped up"); also if you dissolve some salt - about a teaspoon to a pint of water and swoosh round with it (as warm as you can stand) and sort of leave it where the abcess is for a few minutes it can help - its antiseptic and the warmth may encourage the abcess to burst a bit and relieve some of the pressure.

What is the "set up" at your dentists like - if you are just popping in for antibiotics you probably won't be long - the dentist may have a quick look but probably wouldn't do anything - would his nurse keep an eye on the children if they are in the room with you, or is there a kindly receptionist - who would keep an eye on them for a few minutes?

bigcar · 21/02/2011 10:27

sorry you're feeling crap. Would add to the voices saying phone the gp and see of they'll do you a prescription over the phone. Have been in a similar position with dh before now and they've done it for him. You can buy a low dose cocodamol over the counter, would that help at all?

bigbluebus · 21/02/2011 10:29

Poor Marne - I really feel for you. I broke a tooth on the last day of school term last July and had a real panic as my dentist is upstairs and DD is in a wheelchair and can't access the surgery. I was lucky as broken tooth ended up not giving any pain and was able to sort when DH could be here.
I agree with aunteveil - explain situation to GP - who must surely be aware of family situation - and see if you can get antibiotics prescription by phone which might at least improve things in short term.
Good luck - hope you get it sorted soon.

silverfrog · 21/02/2011 11:06

oh Marne. I am so sorry.

I have just finished a year of dental treatment, all made worse by the precedig years of not being able to go to the dentist... I completely get your position.

I wish I were closer - I would come and help.

is there no way you can go in for 10 mins? for a quick look around and prescription? dd1 will now sit for 10 mins, if I need and emergency appt. l sit her down (with dd2), with snacks and my ipod to play on. with an understanding dentist, who will pause when I need to sort out dd1's empty raisin packet (Grin) or similar, we just about get through.

It is so hard, and yes, it really does bring home how awful the situation can be. when I started this course of treatment, dh looked at me in horror when I told him what needed doing.

even he hadn't realised how bad it was (I ended up witha couple of extractions, and implants) - but hwat could he have done anyway? he can't always take time off work to look afte the girls while I go to the dentist.

shazian · 21/02/2011 11:08

Poor you Marne, nothing worse than an abcess. I would watch dc for you if near me Scotland, north lanarkshire. What a nightmare how you coping looking after them when so ill yourself. My GP would give me prescription no prob over fone because he knows my ds and knows how impossible to take him with me. Could you phone again and explain?? Normal paracetamol no use try something stronger like cocodamol also dissolvable solpadeine quite good. Hope you feel better soon and get that mouth sorted. :(

Marne · 21/02/2011 11:29

Thank you, i will try and put up with it until tomorrow when hopfully i can get some antibiotics, if they have to take a look i will just have to take dd's with me and keep hold of dd2 (dd1 will be ok).

Marne · 22/02/2011 10:26

Update- phoned dentist this morning, they want to see me, managed to find a baby sitter (my lovely cousin is going to have the dd's, she's going to have her hands full as she has 3 of her own). Ive never felt so excited about going to the dentist, i have a real phobia but am in so much pain Sad.

silverfrog · 22/02/2011 10:27

I hope you can get it sorted, marne.

good luck for your appt

Marne · 22/02/2011 11:45

Thank you, really woried they will take my tooth out but in another way 'its soo painful, i just want the pain to stop' Sad. I will have to be brave.

silverfrog · 22/02/2011 11:49

extractions are not as bad as you anticipate they will be (speaking a sa veteran of a few!)

they won't do anyhting, i shouldn't htink unitl the infection is gone anyway, so today it should be a quick look and a prescription.

I try to zone out ocmpletely - I have even found myself appreciating the peace tha tis not my war-zone of a house at times (especially when I manage to have an appt in school holidays!) - bizarre what I have come to regard as me-time and peaceful Confused Grin

shazian · 22/02/2011 11:59

Good luck. They wont take tooth out will give you antibiotic, cant take out when infected. Then when you go back maybe either taken out or possible root treatment. Had tooth out for first time ever last year and was shaking with nerves afterwards i was so relieved was over, you dont feel a thing and is over very quick. Be brave anythings better than pain your in now.

bigcar · 22/02/2011 13:33

hope all goes well marne. My dentist has been trying to persuade me for years to have one of my wisdom teeth out as it gets infected quite a lot, I'm such a wuss, I still have the tooth. You have my sympathies.

Marne · 22/02/2011 16:48

I now have to have at least 3 teeth out at hospital Sad, i am a wuss when it comes to the dentist, he wouldn't give me any more antibiotics as he thinks the abcess is clearing, just told me to rinse with mouth wash twice a day, so now i have to wait until April to have them out.

OP posts:
bettyboop63 · 22/02/2011 17:55

omg thats ages away but i guess they cant take em out till the abcess completely goes ouchiesSad hope it gets better soon , as its hosp though can they still ring if they get a space from someone cancelling rare prob but still can happen?

Marne · 22/02/2011 20:59

April is just for the dentist to take a look so will have to wait even longer Sad, i'm hoping they will sort all my teath out at once (i think i need a lot done), until then i will be using a lot of pain killers.

OP posts:
newlife4us · 24/02/2011 18:56

Marne - poor you. I hope the pain goes soon.

Re the extractions, query whether you can have this done under sedation. I had to have a couple of teeth out a few years ago having not been able to get to the dentist because if DD. I was awake but it was like being happy drunk and I remember the extractions (bizarrely) as some kind of lobeli experience!

newlife4us · 24/02/2011 18:59

Sorry I had written lovely experience. Typing on I-phone that keeps replacing my words with it's own alternatives!

SSS1 · 24/02/2011 21:47

Hi, to manage a similar situation as yours, I set up and now provide a sitting service for children with special needs. Where are you located?

purplepidjin · 24/02/2011 21:52

I'm off to visit them tomorrow as similarish part of country, but not sure it'd be wise to leave me with 2 dds I've never met. Distraction will be provided, however - so Marne will finish one cup of tea this half term. Possibly even a biscuit, and if I'm really distracting an entire meal! Grin
