DD2,3.11,is hypermobile(only started walking independently 6 months ago) & has isolated speech delay(she is non-verbal,but makaton's)

Continence nurse has been into pre-school to advise on a toilet training programme,which we started on monday.I am sticking to it by the book,but have had no wee's or poo's on the toilet yet.She doesn't seem aware she is wet or dry either.Have tried different lengths of time after drinks to sit her on the toilet,but when I put her pull-ups back on she wee's/poo's in them!!Angry

Is it just a case of perseverence or are there any other things I could be doing??

Can offer no help I'm afraid. Came here hoping for some tips - at least you have seen a continence nurse.

I think what she is doing (ie waiting for the pull ups) shows that she does have some control; and from what I've read on here and other forums waiting to go in a nappy is quite normal!

Pull ups don't feel wet when she does a wee in them so try puting some folded kitchen towel inside them. It won't hinder them absorbing the wee, but will feel wet to your DD which may help her realise what is going on.

I think all I can offer is do what you are doing-It's taken ds a long time,but he does go on the loo now and can have long dry periods. He still has accidents and never asks to go -but the progress of actually 'performing' on the loo is life - changing

You could also try a chart-writing when she 'goes' etc and see if a pattern emerges.
We were advised to use tissue or nappy liners to help him feel wet;

also as you are seeing a continence nurse,you could ask about washable pants-they're a cross between pull ups and 'normal ' pants and though wouldn't contain a nasty accident,they do help the child to recognise the fact that they have had a wee or poo

we found that the only way to train ds1 (9)ASD and dd2 (5) ASD was by taking off nappies entirely and toileting every 20 minutes / half an hour. With ds1 it took his school a year of doing this during school hours before he finally got it. (we used nappies at home until he was starting to get it!) With dd2 it took about three weeks at home to totally get weeing on loo. We still haven't sorted out pooing. However I suppose it depends on your dds level of understanding. My children have very little understanding esp ds1 and so it took a long long time.
