my son was diagnosed as dyspraxic when he was about 7, he's now 16.

we moved from scotland to england in his last year of primary school, and for his sats he had a scribe, resulting in him getting 5's rather than the predicted 3's

when he was at the end of yr9 we moved again

fast forward to now, he has sat his GCSE english twice and got a D, he needs a C
on parent evening a couple of weeks ago I asked to his english teacher if she thought there was any way he could get higher than a D with his dyspraxia.... turned out she had NO knowledge of it, someone has screwed up, whether its his current school or his previous one not sending the information to them..

we are now on a race against time as he is in yr 11 and will be sitting his GCSE's in a few weeks, hes going to get rest breaks in his exams now and theyve also assessed him with a laptop, in 10 minutes he was capable of writing 120 words, however when typing he managed 390 so a huge difference!

in order to get the full support he needs a formal diagnosis again, as to compound matters the doctors (again have changed surgeries a couple of times) cant find the record of it either!!

As we are so pushed for time i think i will need to go private, we are a low income family and can ill afford it, especially as my partner was told yesterday he will no longer have a job in 4 weeks, but i think its the only way he will have a chance, hes getting a*s in science and maths subjects and needs a decent pass in english..

how do i go about finding someone to do it? Im in the Leeds area if that helps
how much is it likely to cost?
anyone had experience of something like this?

It's unacceptable that your DS's medical records have been 'lost', no matter how many times you've moved.

I would make a Data Protection Act request for his full medical file (you may have to do it in his name as he is old enough). You can ask for this from his current GP and any NHS trusts that he's been treated under. It can take up to 40 days to get the records.

You can also make a request for his education file from both his current school and his previous one.

It's a legal obligation for these organisations to keep appropriate records and to allow you to access them - they cannot simply fob you off.

I can understand why you'd want to go private at this stage though, as you are pushed for time. Also, it would be good to have a more recent dx in order to get DSA at university, if he's planning to go.

I've had a private dyspraxia dx from a child psychiatrist but we are in SE. Have you been in touch with the Dyspraxia Foundation?

You don't need a dx to get the considerations you require in exams.

The school only have to prove that he can't write at acceptably quickly etc. Which they have already done.

What exam board is he under, then google the 'access requirements' for it, and it will tell you everything.
