Respite Home Closure in Sheffield

Hi, my son has Special Needs and is currently in receipt of what is referred to as the basic care package where he spends one night per week and one full weekend in every six at a children's residential care home in Sheffield. He has been going for nearly two years now after we had fought for nearly 12 years to get this help. My husband and I were both on the verge of breakdowns. We still are to be honest, even with the extra help, so you can imagine how devastated we were when in was revealed in the Sheffield Star that the home (Rushey Meadow) was to close as part of the council's (Lib Dems) forthcoming cuts.

Neither us nor any of the staff had any idea that this was going to be proposed so you can appreciate how devastating this blow has been to us all, especially to read it in the local newspaper as well. This respite home provides a vital resource to families such as mine The only way families of children with special needs manage to keep functioning is by having regular breaks from caring, comfortable in the knowledge that their child's individual needs are being met in a caring and loving environment by the skilled and highly dedicated staff.

I and many of the other parents don't know how we are going to cope if this proposal goes ahead. We are attending a meeting with the councillor in question tomorrow and hope to have some questions answered but if anyone out there has any advice they can offer us we would all be very grateful. We are desperate not lose Rushey Meadow as we need it plus our children love going there, they have friends there (it's their only social life) and it is consistent. I don't think that the people making these devastating proposals have any idea, whatsoever, how they are affecting our lives and our vulnerable children's.

Thank you if you can offer us any support.

You have obviously been assessed as needing this help, so have they said what they are going to give you instead if they go ahead with the closure. The LA's situation has changed (ie, they have to save money - but your situation - the one they assessed- has not changed).
Our LA proposed closure of Adult Day Centre to save money - but were at least proposing to move clients to another centre. Upsetting and disruptive nevertheless but at least they still had somewhere else to go.
Fight the closure but also ask them what the alternatives are.

Post it on ActNow Facebook site which is monitoring cuts for disabled.

You can probably judicially review the decision - your child may even be able to get legal aid - on the basis there has been inadequate consultation / impact assessment etc.

There was a recent doc called 'Cemented to the Floor by Law' which talked about JR / poss remedies when cuts were applied.

It won't necessarily stop the closure but may delay it.

How are they going to meet need for respite? If they have assessed it as a need then I think they have a statutory duty to provide it. If they cannot now provide it you would probably be able to take legal action.

I would suggest setting up your own facebook page etc to get support / form a campaign group

Get hold of any docs eg on Council website etc about any consultation eg what they did, who they consulted, how long the consultation lasted, what the impact assessment said + council decision / minutes. You will need to show these to a lawyer

You may be able to get a charity to support you eg if ASD the NAS may be interested; or Mencap etc - sorry I don't know what the disability is but most likely there is a support group which may back you.

Also local MP etc. Is it Labour MP???

Placards outside Town Hall????

Brilliant stuff from Agnes.

Definitely start up a Facebook page to campaign against the closure and if you can, post the above with a link to the FB page in AIBU and any forum on here with high traffic.

Get a group of parents together and write to the local newspaper.

Isn't Nick Clegg a Sheffield MP? God, think of ANY way possible to embarrass him - and the constituency MP of course. National press may be interested?

Closing a respite home will cost the LA more money than it saves if one of those young people goes into full time care as a result of family breakdown
