Can anyone recommend any resources for a toddler (two and a half) with speech delay? DVDs, games, books, groups or classes in the London area?

Thank you.

Whereabouts are you? We have drop-in chattermatter groups in Hackney run by speech therpists. Mr Tumble are good dvds - from the cbeebies. ICAN is a good website to look at too

The Hanen book "It Takes Two to Talk" is pricey but excellent.

Agree - The other Hanen Book 'More than Words'is brilliant.

And the Soemthing Special (Mr Tumble) DVD's are excellent, especially the newer ones.

We're Lewisham / Southwark borders, but happy to travel a bit for a good group.

A rather random list of some of the things that have helped us in the last year:
This is a really good website full of articles and tips on how to get talking with toddlers, you can buy the DVDs too but there is a lot of free info there.
We also found Orchard Toys games were good, for example this one, books:You Choose is really good for language and can be used at different levels, also books that show people doing things the child can relate to eg books about their day etc.
We aso found a toy magaphone very useful at one stage, DS would repeat things we said using the megaphone that he wouldn't otherwise.

Have you tried PECS? This helped ds1 as he is a really visual learner. You can make the pictures yourself and find out how to do it via youtube videos, your local speech and language team should be able to arrange for you to go on a course too (same goes for makaton), although mine took ages to sort out.

If it seems like a problem getting their lips/tongue/jaw etc to do what they want it to do, you could try some sucking, blowing, licking games, copying in front of the mirror etc.

Try your local childrens centre as they may have a speech therapist you can access help and advice from. They are separate to the NHS provision.

The Hanen books are excellent. It takes 2 is a general book for speech delayed children and More than Words is ASD specific so it depends on your dx ( or suspicions) which to go for. We had More than Words and it was like someone finally knew and could describe my DS. They are expensive so you probably won't want both.
