Hi,

Does anyone know if it's ok to use a button which is longer than what is measured for?

Just blocked Luuk's with losec. Have tried and trie dto unblock it. Remy has gone to children's ward for one but he needs a 14fr 1.5 cm and they only have a 2cm one. Think it will be ok?

The only alternatives other than that are a) to go to Edinburgh Sick Kids for one ( way too tired for that since we've all been up since 3am with Luuk puking and spent all afternoon at hospital) or B) Put in an NG tube - really don't want to go there and not sure we'd manage since he was bieng sedated when we were still having to pass NGs.............

Cheers

xx

Oh Shaz. So sorry to hear. Can you call Edinburgh Sick Kids or a doctor or NHS?
Sorry no help, but bump!

Tomorrowslookingfine · 14/02/2011 21:45

Sorry no idea about using a longer button, but have heard stories about using fizzy drinks as a flush to clear the blockage, may be worth a try?

Hope it gets sorted, and bump!

bigbluebus · 14/02/2011 22:26

Sorry can't help but I agree with
glimmer - would ring children's hospital for advice.

For future - do you not keep spare button in stock. We are supplied with a spare just in case of problems and SEN school also have a spare for each child who needs one.

We were forever blocking DD's tube when she was on Losec - it sets like cement. Have switched to Lansaprozole now (Fastabs) which doen't seem to cause as many problems.

Good luck- hope you get sorted out quickly

starfishmummy · 14/02/2011 22:51

Shaz it will stick out and rub/be uncomfortable but may be OK for a short while if there is nothing else.

I agree with bigbluebus - don't they let you have a spare? (We are only allowed one spare at a time - DS has to carry it to school and back which is a nuisance!)

NowtWorthOwt · 15/02/2011 11:16

try unblocking the tube with hot water, fresh fruit juice or fizzy coke! you'll need a 50ml syringe, as bolusing on its own won't do it.
you probably have it sorted by now but maybe good for future reference?

Herecomestheninkynonk · 15/02/2011 13:14

Hi Shaz

Hope all sorted now. I know it doesn't help in an emergency, but thought I'd let you know, we use a pestle & mortar to mash up the losec, which has prevented any blockages. I'm sure it isn't dissolvable as claimed!

Like Starfish, we carry a spare at all times. It's a pain in the rear but essential as even though we're near a big childrens' hospital, they can never find one the right size!

trace2 · 15/02/2011 15:05

what happened how is he now? you should really have a spare! our nurse un blocked ours there is a way to do it but nurse only do in emergency .

growlybear · 15/02/2011 15:42

Hi shaz298 hope you managed to get luuk's button sorted. Why o why do these things always happen at night.

shaz298 · 15/02/2011 19:59

Hi everyuone and thank you so much.Sorry it's taken so long to get back on.

We got an emergency button from the children's ward. It is a wee bit long but fine really. We used our spare and were waiting on a new one being deliviered! Lucky white heather.

However he spiked a huge temperature this morning, has been out of it most of the day and now had bloody ( as in the red stuff) diarrhea!.

His temps come down and have just spoken to paed on the phone. He'll see him tomorrow morning and if he worsens again in the night I've to just take him down to the ward.

Everything crossed for a quiet night.

Poor DS and poor you for another night of unrest. Really hope it all settles down.

starfishmummy · 16/02/2011 16:54

Hope all is well, Shaz.(((hugs))) to Luuk

shaz298 · 16/02/2011 18:04

Thanks. Now have explosive poo! A friend whose daughter also helped out at the docs exams is also ill. She's not been great, but not ill since the exams and yesterday spiked a temp and today having explosive poos too......

Weird, I've never heard of a bug with a 2 week incubation time....at least we can be pretty sure it''s a bug and not that I've poisoned him by giving him real food in his tube ( that was a worry) xx
