Do not panic. What really matters is that you build a clear and complete picture of what your ds can and can't do, and which interventions are needed for him to reach his maximum potential. Which order to rank problems, whether to say 'traits' or Aspergers syndrome, the cause of communication problems... all of this is less important.
Diagnostic labels are useful for staff rather than parents (except sometimes for proving you're not losing the plot or for service eligibility). Because we know our children inside out. We know instinctively where to provide support, when they aren't understanding us, the situations which cause a meltdown. No diagnosis could match that.
It's the professionals who need a short, snappy signpost to point them in the right direction when working with our dc. And they need us to make sure they customise their approach to suit our particular children.
