How easy is it to move schools with a statement?

Seriously considering moving. Have a new sm but things are just getting worse daily at current school. How do you plan a move to a new school without letting current school know? Should I ring around to see who has places or is there a different system for SEN dc's?. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Don't know how to go about this, but just want to say sorry things not going well. I imagine you can just go and look round though as you would without a statement. Take the statement with you and then you can see how they react to it - their reaction should tell you a lot Grin

Did they ever appoint the LSA, are they implementing the statement yet??

It is so disheartening to have to keep fighting when we think the hard bit should be over.

Thanks Moose. Lsa due to start in a couple of weeks. Yeah I did think once I had the sm things would get better, not worse (bitter lol).
Ds has been missing practically every break and lunch as punishemnts for various incidents (mainly rudeness to staff, pushing children). He only has a go at the kids because he is constantly having to put up with their little digs, kicks etc..and says he can't stick it any more. He is meant to be having 'training to develop strategies to recognise the precursors to outbursts and help him manage his anger and anxiety'. He has been given f* all and I am just sick of it all now. He goes in every morning unhappy and comes out every day in a worse state. I wrote to Senco stating how he was feeling ill etc.. as well as other things and when she wrote back did not mention this at all! Her letters to me are patronising and condescending and I am a governor. What the hell is she like to other parents. Excuse the rant but I have had it today.

I now have a renegade HT so when I moved schools, leaving on bad terms with the previous one, dd did a trial week at the new school then HT offered me a place phoned LEA and told them he had admitted dd and asked them to amend the statement. Then he phoned the old school and told them she wouldn't be coming back. LEA were gobsmacked but admitted that he had done in 24 hours what it would take the LEA at least 24 days. Old school were furious because they had to pay LSA out of their own funds to meet her notice period. I was Grin so it can be done quickly and simply but it often isn't.

Just had a thought. The sm doesn't actually name the school he is at currently as he goes to secondary in September so that has been named instead. Won't need to get the sm amended presumably in that case?

impressive asd Grin

the system is supposed to work differently with a statement as it's usually done through the sen case worker, you could call them and see what they have to say. I would say it would be a very good idea to know exactly where you want first. They may say you need to call an emergency review or they may just sort it out as it's a ms to ms move.

The usual process would be send out your ds' statement to the school you name (usually in a written request) and wait for their response, then panel etc. Or you may hit lucky and find a school like asds!

He is great tbh fills the school with SEN children and fights to do his very best by them. It's hugely inclusive dd fits in just brilliantly as do the children with even more significant difficulties too.OFSTED rated the support for SEN outstanding and it is not just for the duration of their visit but there each and every day.

asdx2 · 10/02/2011 19:02

The HT told the LEA he felt the protracted process of admitting a statemented child was discriminatory as without a statement a child would start immediately so he chose to ignore the usual process because of that Grin

Interesting statement does not name current school - maybe they are not actually getting funding then and perhaps they think don't need to bother with anything as going soon (ish!)?

I think I said this before so ignore me if I am boring but it really might be worth a word with the SEN Officer/Case officer who issued the statement to put him/her in the picture about lack of implementation.

Another thing occurred to me - is the school named for secondary involved in transition things with DS yet - they usually start this much earlier with statemented children and do much more of it. Just a thought, because if they get involved with him now it might help give him something positive and keep him engaged with the idea of school.

Hi Andpers - apologies for calling you Moose earlier in the thread - am tired. Hope things are o.k with you and your ds.
Current school is definitely getting funding - LA have confirmed to me the date it started!
Am composing strong ltr to HT asking what support is being provided and how/when it is happening. Ds is being punished reguarly by missing lunch and break times but the dc's who are making him over-react are not. These are the same kids we have discussed with school time & again. A couple of weeks ago we discussed the bullying issue but nothing appears to have been done to help ds.
New school don't start transition visits until June.

When DS's statement was amended for secondary transition, it had both primary and secondary school named (with secondary as 'after September') - I'm pretty sure the school should be named in the statement even if he's due to move up.

IPSEA have a model letter for asking for a change of named school here. But it says you can't make the request within one year of the statement being finalised/amended, so I'd check with them.
