What do I ask?

I have booked a meet with Sam's teacher after a few comments by her set off alarms he was gling wayward again. Apparently he is biting, spitting and hitting- exactly the same things that started all the probs at his last school.
She never mentioned any of this to me: I gathered this by tales from his Brother, an accidental admission (quickly withdrawn) by Sam, and when I showed Teacher my hand this mrning (he had bitten me), she said she got a lot of that from him.

So- what do I ask?

So far, school deny any problems from him and don't feel he needs SENCO. His last school said this at first, but he ended up going downhill once he settled in- a pattern with Sam in everything- and they couldn't cope. I want to stop this before we get desperate this time.

I also have appointments with paeds next week (he needs to be diagnopsed again as the last one doesn't stand in Wales), and at BIBIC. What would they find useful to know?

Sam's behaviour is deteriorating again as it always does when he settles. He crawls a lot of the time when we're shopping now, screeching as we go.

try asking what sorts of behaviours stand out from teh rest of teh class. how many times they need to "deal" with him most days. thats ort of thing.

they may not see it as too big a problem but it can help you to see what he is like at school.

Does your son go to a SN school? its just im surprised his teacher failed to mention his biting. you shoudl ask to be informed after every incident ( i thought this was standard practice but maybe not)

anyway i hope all goes well with the pead.

Can you write down what is happening out of school just for the time until you see the Paed? I don't suppose school would be willing to keep a record of specific behaviours such as spitting, biting etc and their response? (critical to know if poss).

I can ask if they keep a record, or would do for me. He doesn't go to a special school, he is lucky in that he goes to a very routine focussed Faith school where he knows what he is doing every minute... I think that is why he has behaved there so long!

DS2's teacher (He's in Reception) hauled us up for one incident of biting, I don't know why this Teacher didnt mention anything

I had a real problem getting the school to tell me what had gone on when ds1 was in mainstream. Every day I was told he was 'fine" then the annual review was produced which made him sound like some sort of monster. Luckily for me several incidents had been observed by our private SALT and I was able to piece together what was going on.

I sent in a behaviour chart for the school to ring each day. Just very simple chart scoring attention, begative behavour and a place to record anything specific- eg pinching. I can't say it worked that well but he wasn't a the school for much longer.
