Which bit of equipment would you throw out the window?!

Hey all,

Would just like to say I am very close to throwing DS' saturation monitor out of the window (I will of course detach him from the same prior to the event!)

Stupid thing rings off continuously (it says how much oxygen he has in his blood), but it gets confused and rings off every time DS wriggles his toes, which as at 10 months he is foot obsessed, is every few minutes. Alarm ringing round the house. Aaghh!

Anyone else have any equipment they would like to take a baseball bat to (if it didn't put DC in danger of course)....

Most of it just to reclaim my house!

When Luuk was little we would've happily thrown out the sats monitor!!

He always self resolved when he had a dip so we ended up only using it when he was ill with flu/tummy bug etc Blush. We did eventually own up to the pead who was ok about it really. (Not suggesting for a minute you do this though!!)

Hubby would happily throw out the feeding pump ..............

Professionals........the only one I'd throw away is the big arrogant cardiologist who has an issue with females!!! The rest of Luuk's team are fantastic so can't moan there.

xx

Dh's AFOs. (not the current ones) we have the previous (broken) set, and one single one from the set before that! Throw them away you do not have 5 legs!!!!!

Ditto the handmade boots from before the AFOs, they don't fit anymore... get rid of them!!!!!!!

(interplay of CMT and AS)Hmm

growlybear · 08/02/2011 08:59

I second the feeding pump sometimes it alarms over and over again for no good reason.Proffesionals -speech and language -utterly useless.

donkeyderby · 08/02/2011 09:01

AFO's too. In fact, we did throw them out of the window (metaphorically speaking).

They kept him awake at night and the physio admitted that there is no evidence that they work. Bollocks to AFO's

meltedmarsbars · 08/02/2011 09:52

Signandsmile - they re-use the afo's here - offer them to your Orthotics dept, sometimes they send them abroad.

SparkleRainbow · 08/02/2011 10:01

Ooo I have plenty of professionals who I would throw out of the window, so if anyone needs something to chuck just let me know Grin

newname0601 · 08/02/2011 11:58

Professionals. Every single one of them today.

twlight · 08/02/2011 16:06

standing frame - it is a contortion device ....

1980Sport · 08/02/2011 16:12

No equipment but I'd happily throw the SLT (feeding specialist) out the window too! I can't get ds to drink any fluid other than milk, I filmed all my various attempts to show her. She arrived at the house with this determined look - ds firmly put his arm over his mouth and wriggles away at every tactic. After 90 mins with him crying his eyes out she said 'oh just keep doing what you're doing, I give up - I'm referring him to the psychologist' it took me over an hour to settle him after she left!
Great help Hmm

1980Sport · 08/02/2011 16:22

Agree twilight on the standing frame actually although we're using it less and less - I use my head to keep him in place while trying to do the straps up!!

intothewest · 08/02/2011 16:41

when ds was little he had a walker it was great-nice and light-2 wheels-really helped him walk in a controlled way

physio thought she'd get him a new one- 4 wheels, much bigger and heavier-ds realised that every time he went downhill he could pick his feet up and coast...or he could 'run'

Grin he thought it was fun

thanks for the improvement .....

Herecomestheninkynonk · 08/02/2011 16:49

Hehe, loving the do it yourself SN equipment and the stunt 4 wheel walker!

I'll second the feeding pump too. DS puts his teeth through the giving set so all the milk goes over him, the cot, well anywhere other than into his tummy!

Professionals are allowed to be used as weights to ensure maximum damage to equipment!

The stupid Physio ball I spent £45 on - DS2 hates it and it took me a week to pump it up! At the moment DS1 uses it as a footrest.

signandsmile · 08/02/2011 18:23

Thanks melted Im not sure if its the same for kids AFOs? but dh's were made to his (very) wonky legs. Don't think they would fit other person? (takes forever to be moulded for a new pair) next time he goes I will get him to ask if they can reuse the pair and a half. (half a pair cos the other leg snapped in half, boy that was a bugger of a day!)

Davros · 08/02/2011 21:40

weighted blanket

signandsmile · 09/02/2011 08:58

ooo davros If you are chucking can I lurk and catch? wanted to try one for ds, but don't want to buy as i am very unsure if it will work for ds...

Davros · 09/02/2011 10:13

Blush I don't think I will actually get rid of it, I have just never mastered how to "apply" it so maybe I need to try harder. Sorry.

starfishmummy · 09/02/2011 11:34

When DS was tiny he had pressure sores following an op. THe community nusrse called in another specialist nurse and they arranged a special mattress. I thought it was odd that they didn't want to measure his cot........

It arrived. Hospital cot size. Only size it came in. DS had a strange sized cot (continental?) so a bit bigger than a conventional cot and smaller than cot bed. Matress was too wide and too short. Tried to get them to change it or take it back (but no, it was "ours"; nurse suggested cutting it down!!). I kept the stupid thing for years, still in its original plsatic wrapping, as it seemed such a waste of money not to.

Eventually through another community nurse we sent it to the local nhs respite home.

the wheelchair I have for DS which I can't push up hills (I live on a hill)

LollipopViolet · 09/02/2011 16:39

Ooh donkeyderby, I agree. My friend H's wheelchair is constantly breaking its brakes and WCS won't replace it. I can also barely push it up a hill and she needs help on even a mild slope!
