Devient, I'm pretty sure there was thread about medication a couple of months ago but not sure if it was in this section or mental health (sorry for being useless!). I hope someone comes along with a bit more help! x

DS has started taking Prozac quite recently after being on Risperidone (to reduce anxiety) successfully for some years. The reason for the change, although we are currently phasing in one and the other out, is due to trying to control his OCD behaviour. So far its been OK, we will see the Psychiatrist again in a few weeks. I will report back if you are still interested.

Thanks Davros, please do x

Hi Devient It may have been a threat I was on as my dd was on Prozac. She was on it for her Autism and it was amazing it worked almost within the week. She was on it for around two years and has been off it for two. I'm not sure why your child is having it for, as it may be for completely different reasons. I'm more than happy to answer any questions that you have.

thanks Daisy, I think I have decided to let him take it? Think I was just worrying with him having a heart condition. As well as years ago I was on seroxat for PTSD and it was horrendous coming off, so was worried about withdrawal for him.
Given his extreme anxieties, aggression and non compliance, it may be worth a go just in case it does calm these areas a bit, enough to work on. So he can function somewhat socially. ATM he doesn't cope at all leaving the house, he's 10 soon x

Can I ask why Prozac as a first med and not risperidone?

daisysue2 · 10/02/2011 17:26

My dd had extreme anxieies, very little eye contact with people she didn't know. But this all changed and she is much more able to cope with life. She did become a bit too happy at times and was quite impulsive but it was much better than the previous anxiety. She became very confident, not so confident now but she hasn't gone back to the old ways.

devientenigma · 13/02/2011 09:11

Davros risperidone wasn't offered, just prozac.
Thanks daisy

Is it possible to ask why not Risperidone? I would think it is more suitable for the difficulties you describe (imo, not that I'm a Dr!). Risperidone also has a little research on effects with ASD and there is a LOT of practice/experience out there. We got Risperidone for anxiety but Prozac for OCD. HTH.
