Could anyone tell me what 0.7 of a TA looks like?

Head, shoulders to just below the waist?

I have heard, via the Ed Psych, that DS is probably going to be awarded additional funding via a statement to the value of 0.7 of a TA...can anyone tell me what that means in hours?

TIA!

Assuming 6 hours of school a day, 30 a week, that would be 21 hours a week. So 5 mornings plus a bit?
It's not a bad amount these days for a Statement - and as it's over 20 hours the county will fund rather than the school.

pmslGrin must be like one of those cows cut in half in formaldehyde lol ive no idea about the hours tho soz

loulou77 · 07/02/2011 14:13

That's great Hassled thanks...my next problem is finding out whether that's going to meet his needs. The Ed Psych meeting today (where I gleaned this useful bit of info about what the panel are recommending for him...no-one's actually told me anything formally yet!)was to try to glean an idea of what provision should look like. They prefer to leave their recommendations broad, to give the LA room to wriggle ensure flexibility in meeting a child's needs.

I can see an independent second opinion in the offing!

bettyboop63...I had an image like that in my mind when they said it!

Thanks again, for the quick replies

lol, at the head and shoulders Smile

hassled, do the school have to fund all statements under 20 hours then? no wonder my sons school keep telling me he wont get a statement, they probably dont want him to if theyve got to fund it! i thought it was the LA funded it

loulou77 · 07/02/2011 16:11

brandy77 I didn't know at what level resources required became more than school was expected to proivde either!

I have spoken with the school who had also been given the info about the panel's decision re funding (am I the last to know) and they are really happy with that level of resourcing for DS...so am holding off doing anything else until I actually get the draft statement through

Really appreciate the help on this xx

I'm sure you've worked it out now, but don't take the tear ducts or the legs - thread on here last week about the TA bursting into tears and running away.
Refuse those parts and you'll be fine.

shaz298 · 07/02/2011 16:13

The way they allocate 1-1 hours always intrigues me.

Surely if a child needs support, they need it full stop!! Especially if the need is physical and need help with toileting etc. Are the kids supposed to fit their need to go to the loo around the times the 1-1 is available???

And if the kiddies need support in lessons, doesn't that apply to all lessons??

Good luck. xx

bettyboop63 · 07/02/2011 16:16

i guess as they have stated my Ds needs 25 hrs 1-1 im lucky then still he will have to do breaks and lunch without her and thats one of the times he needs her most but i cant complain if he recieves thats tho will prob be another matter

shaz298 · 07/02/2011 16:37

Don't see why you can't complain if, as you say, your child NEEDS that support at those times!! I think it's really sad that you feel you just have to accept what they give - you don't.!!

Our children whould have the support they NEED in order to help them to achieve their full potential across the development areas, not just in class!!!

If you feel he's being short changed then say so. If you need some support then contact your local children's rights worker and ask them to advocate on behalf of your son.

brandy77 - it used to be the case that all but the first 5 hours of Statemented 1-1 time was County funded. It's changed fairly recently so that any Statements of less than 20 hours a week 1-1 are now funded from the school's existing SEN budget (SEN funding has been tweaked slightly but not really enough to cover this).

What we're increasingly seeing is the County pushing through Statements of say 18 or 19 hours, just so they don't have to fund it. We did appeal one recently and were successful - got it to the 25 hours it should have been in the first place.

And yes, you're right - there is the potential that a school might discourage applying for a Statement because they're strapped for cash, but in reality I don't think any halfway decent school would do that. They have to be seen to be doing the best for their pupils, and most do genuinely want the best for their pupils.

Sorry, just found this thread. I love the idea of knees upwards or something for a 0.7 person Grin. I could do that and still get to put my feet up. If I could work that is! Grin

It means 3 and half days a weeks, in reality that probably means 2 full days and three half days.

Fingers crossed you get it!

Hassled · 07/02/2011 17:23

I've just realised that what I've posted could be nonsense outside of my County - I don't actually know if what I've decsribed is nationwide policy or just my county, IYSWIM. Sorry if I've mislead anyone. I really need to find out now.

loulou77 · 07/02/2011 19:09

Hassled...wherever you are it sounds like something similar is in place near me...DS seems to have been given "Band 7"...which (I hope amongst other things) means 0.7 TA...and from Band 7 upwards (to Band 10 which is apparently 24/7 curriculum) is funded by the LA.

No idea what the other bands comprise or where I find that out!

Like others...looking at DS now I have no idea how playtime/lunchtime might work, but am bearing in mind that 6 months ago DS wasn't toilet trained

Good luck to everyone else going through the maze at the moment...this board has been a life saver

In fact, it was from here that I knew it was best for me to apply for Stat assessment, because I could reapply again straight away (no 6 month wait)...when I told the Ed Psychs this today they said "Oh, you know that?"...YUP thanks to the good people here!

Funding varies greatly from LA to LA. In Gloucestershire, primary schools have to fund the first 10 hours and secondary the first 20 on a statement.

A whole TA is 25 hours a week. Anything extra, like lunchtime supervision, is expressed separately here as they get paid less for this!

My son has 15 hours plus 5 hours lunchtime supervision per week. 0.7 of a TA would be 17.5 hours, probably 5 mornings at 3 hours a morning plus an extra 1/2 hour for lunchtime or in the afternoon.
I work as a TA for a child who has 15 hours (or 0.6) and I support him in the mornings for literacy and numeracy, which are considered the most important subjects. He just has to cope in the afternoons!
It's all about money I'm afraid.
Good Luck!

loulou77 · 08/02/2011 16:46

Thanks EllenJane1! Good to know what the hours might be..I think it's more likely to be 17.5 on that basis, but still funded by the LA.

I am going to push back for the other 0.3...DS needs a TA with legs and feet metaphorically speaking!
