ok i need some help im having to look at where ds3 will be going for year 3 but have to name it by May this year he is year 1 atm

but becuase of way reviews are done have to know a year ahead

He is currentley in s&l unit which finshes year 2 and i have been warned that my chances of getting a place for year 3 in another unit are low due to his problesm

He has severe speeh problems no constant sound sother than H .He has hypermoblity and low muscle tone so wears afos and uses wheelchair for distacne can walk but very slow pace and with stumbles .also affects ablity to write has juststarted to write his name fills a4 sheet with it and takes 5mins or so and needs talking through it .

He is on pscales 5 and 6 for just about everything no ones sure if his pd are afffecting his learning by just how much and how much is caused by Ld theres defintley some as he has delayed understanding to came out at 3.11

The Mld school in our area is not intrested when talked to them today said his speech and pd means there not equipped for him .they wont have access to own computer and they feel his lack of speech is to much ( they do use some makton ) though he is currentley learning padget gorman at unit as more full language with verbs etc

Ms its a no just on the no language alone let alone the fact juniors the gap will widen its already massive and we did try ms and even in reception was obvious that was not right place

Have you looked at the other special schools in your area- Ds's was for SLD when he started, but there is a real mixture of ability, from PMLD to children who are on a split placement with MS school- I would just look at as many as possible

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 12:51

there sonly 2 mld schools in herts and both turned ds down. The sld school is not suitable either have seen it and ds is not right for it

theirs one possiablity of school for physical and nerological diffculties and from conversation they said ds does seem to be right for them they do have children that are mobile but they waned me my biggest fight will be Lea as ds doe snot have a dx as such just as lots of smaller ones

in a similarish position, it's bloody hard! We've finally found a ss about 2 LEAs over from us that ticks a lot of boxes although is still not perfect, she has an assessment there this week. But nothing else comes vaguely close to meeting her needs, there'd be so much extra we'd have to start from scratch and so much extra support to be put in it wouldn't work any where else. We've the same problem with communication in that dd3s speech may never come on so it's unlikely long term that makaton would suffice, we use sign supported english (BSL with english grammar) but her fine motor control isn't great so it's not perfect but what else can you do! We visited a fair few schools before we found this one, spent ages trawling the net, hope something turns up.

hows learning padget gorman going?

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 13:15

padget gormans going ok and its teh same same as sign supported english as its full language i have had togo learn it as before hand ds was using makton but

speech unit like padget gorman and the teacher have been really good about working with ds other diffculties but unit goes only to year 2.Its s&l unit bit they do not access the ms side of the school even eat in the unit which for ds has been fantatsic as he struggles with using cultery and has had fantastic support

but like your dd , ds fine motor control is a problem his hands will just not go in some of the shapes he will either need another very supportive speech placement or the pd school .

Can i ask how did you get the assement?

have you looked into the smaller units attached to ms schools? There are quite a few in herts.
Was the possible school, was it GS?

bigcar · 07/02/2011 13:43

We had a discussion at her annual review about why all the local schools wouldn't be able to meet her needs, thankfully the ed psych and her teacher of the deaf backed us up, that was in october. We had to wait for panel to agree to forwarding her papers which they did after 2 sittings!! So the school have asked to see her and if they think they can meet her needs it will be back to panel again for the funding.

It was hard work, ms was out anyway as ms with base isn't working but it was proving why the other places were not right and outlining all the extras that would need to be paid for and the work that it would entail. So basically they were left with no choice, I'm sure had there been an alternative they could think of they'd have said.

I only know 2 padget gorman signs, toilet and bullshit, possibly useful for dealing with the LEA Grin

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 13:45

i looked at some of the units attached at their aimed at dc on asd spectrum.

No ds is in GS in their speech unit and they are fantastic really are will be sorry that he will have to leave after year 2 .The teacher and the head coped so well .

The normal follow on is RD by you but i have already been given heads up by Gs that chances of ds getting place are low becuase his speech is still very severe and his Ld and pd are coming into play more now

Am looking at school in Lonsdale as if ds does need acc there more set up to deal with it

Dd is at our lovely local primary and chatted to the head and she said she love to have him but being honest she told me would not have a clue where to start and that he be really only included by being in same location as he need full time 1-1 and such a differanted curriculm he is on pscales 5-6

hmm, tense doesn't always change the sign in bsl, a lot of emphasis is put on facial expression and you still mouth the words even if you don't say them out loud. I did level 1 last year and that was fairly easy, mostly just conversational but this year am finding level 2 hard work, so much more grammar and getting the structure of the sentence right, it will definitely be down to luck if I pass this year!

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 07/02/2011 13:54

lonsdale is great as is GS.
Let me know if you need any more info on schools here, I used to work in education so know a few good ones and some bad ones too :(

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 14:05

thank you .He wont get junior Gs as it is pure Ms and if i wanted ms obviously ones lot nearer to me .

Yes on paper and phone Lonsdale atm is seeming the best bet but sending pm to ask about RD

ah in PAdget gorman theres a change in sign from to walk . then walking and walked .The first part of the sign is the same you sign walk but depending on the tense you change it .

You should see me trying to sign yesterday we walked to the shops.Tomorrow we are going swimming and now its lunch time .I gave up and signed I want to go home lol

. Even remembering now , morning evening yesterday or tomorrow gets me in a muddle

yes still say the words said here to

OP posts:
bigcar · 07/02/2011 16:43

ah, in bsl walk would stay the same, you don't use -ed or -ing at all, although I would for sse. See this is the problem I'm having, although all the vocab is the same for bsl and sse, the sentence structure changes Confused

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 17:00

Yes seen Bsl is differnt set up

have been talking to Ss and here they use makton so to me that be taking him back a step as there's no signs for words like Is,it or or tenses

So even more confused now as that to me will make it hard as school and me working hard on converting his signing to pG then he have to switch back to makton but realstically his fine motor will always be an issue

Think I may only have 2 options either the speech unit that follows on from where he is now but that's dependent on his current unit agreeing that there support it and the next unit agreeing that he is suitable

With current placement support I'll not be able to fight the LEA because I know they are going to be anti it as his other issues are more obvious ,Mind if his speech does not improve a lot then were looking at eletronic devices
which would then help with the only real other possiable alternative which is school for children with physical or neurological disablties

That's with out not with

OP posts:
SparkleRainbow · 07/02/2011 17:22

You could try forcing them to accept him at the mld school. Their refusal being mainly based on not having the facillities to meet his physical needs, well sometimes they can change that. Our LA says ds is about to get a laptop or "Neopad" (?) to enable his writing - not that I am holding my breath of course!

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 17:55

Ot want to wait to Y3 im like erm were well intoy1 and he can jut about write his own name as long as he talked through and he needs whole sheet of a4 to do it on and you may need to guess the last 3

sparkel thought about it but if they dont want him well i dont want to give them pleasure of his company he is a really easy going quick to laugh little boy

Im going to go for the other language unit or the pd and fight the dam Lea .They know if he goes into Ms then they are looking at him needing at least 32 hrs of 1-1 as well as Ot and weekly salt going in to

am going to the pd school first week of march they seem way more welcomin g than any of the other Mld who even on phone was making judgements on my ds

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 17:57

mld were arguing the speech problemkept aying you sure hes not Autistic if he is we may be able to help as most of our students arghh only thing we can agree on me and proffesionals is he is not

big car Just wanted to say good luck with the BSL stage two... Did mine about 10 years ago, (now feeling old!) Am in process of helping to set up stage one course at local ms school, to train staff for ds to start in Sept, (have local Deaf tutor who is friend who is going to teach.)

If you wanna meet for practice and are in South West pm me... Smile

SparkleRainbow · 07/02/2011 18:52

They just find it so much easier to generalise don't they. Tat is why I am wary of the LA having labels. I want a dx, I want to understand, but as soon as the LA think they have a label it becomes one-size fits all. The only people who have a problem with labels are the numpties who dole them out!

goingroundthebend4 · 07/02/2011 18:57

ds has lots of dx the Lea have problem with that becuas they not seen his combination before .

There used to either a label or one dx that explains everything and as it stands we dont have one and not likley for a few years

though suspect the Eds would cover a few of his

OP posts:
SparkleRainbow · 07/02/2011 19:39

Bonkers really because whether it is one dx or several, as far as any LA is concerned they should be looking at the whole child, and each of his/her needs separately. It is enough to make you scream.
