Hi, mumsnet newbie here. We hope to move to Brighton and need to find a secondary school for our eldest son (with statement for dyslexia, ADD and ASD, but normal/above average intelligence/language). Any tips? THANKS!

Hello

Sorry I can't really answer the question from experience as DS is only 18 months but I didn't want your post to go unanswered. Have you tried posting on the Mumsnet local brighton pages?

I have heard good things from friends about both Longhill and Stringer schools. Which area of Brighton do you hope to move to?

I think that Blatchington in Hove has a very good SN unit attached to it. i don't have any experience of it myself though.

Thanks for your message RunawayRasin :). I'll try my luck at the local page (didn't know they existed!).
Thank you for the tip BeattieBow, that gives me somewhere to start looking. It is such an important decision, I really want to get it right!

Brighton College has a specialist dyslexia unit. I would also look at the CRESTED website.

Hope that helps.

I had a child with asd at Brighton college - I really wouldn't recommend sending him there. We ended up having to move our ds. Not good.

Thanks guys!
That doesn't sound good, Polyanna! Did you find a good alternative?

Ds has mild ASD, but can get a bit anxious. It is a hard decision, there is an excellent school where we are. Maybe realise my dream when ds has finished sec school?

Hello

I live in this area and would also not reccommend Brighton College.

DS1 friend joined his school this year as he has dsypraxia (spelling of ??) and wasn't allowed to use his laptop at Brighton College.

Brighton College fab school if super bright, want to work super hard and you have £££££££££'s!

Are you looking at private?

Decent schools in this area are massasively over subscribed hence why DH and I scrimp and save to send DS1 and DS2 private - also DH went to said school has v happy memories.

If you are looking private let me know.

Innocent, which schools are considered good?

It may be a bit unfair in many people's eyes, but children with statements can get into oversubscribed schools, IF that is the best school for them.

Private is probably not an option, but if we would, which school would you recommend?

Children with statements naming a school must be admitted to that school regardless of the admissions criteria.

If a child has a statement, the parents can name any state school they prefer their child to attend. LAs must meet the parents? preference unless the school is unsuitable, or it would affect the efficient education of other children, or it is too expensive.

It's then up to the LA and school to prove any of these points, there is no obligation for the parents to show that it's the best school for them.
