Due to see this today, but DS suddenly decided he is scared as there might be lots of bangs and surprises.

We know this is an issue for him but hoped he might be fine once in and settled, as often happens. (Will take ear defenders!)

Has anyone been, if so can you tell me how the show starts, because if I can explain that bit to him then we will probably be ok!

Many thanks

call and ask, they were helpful when we went but we didnt do the show

andperseand · 05/02/2011 12:37

Thanks Brandy.
Thanks too Lisa - called them today and they could not help, also the venue is not taking calls this morning so no help there either. Should have thought to call during the week Grin

Just off now so will hope for the best - he does surprise us from time to time. And I am getting to go for coffee with friends while the DHs take the kids (I only have 1 DH, it is a group trip!!) - so at least for once I get to not be the one with my heart in my mouth ...

Hope it goes ok and your ds enjoys himself.

I've been thinking about booking this for ds1, but had the same concerns. Its on in March near-ish to us.

I was thinking of trying to book seats right next to an exit, so we can escape if its too much for him. Got frustrated, as they don't show the exits on the online plan, so will have to ring the venue now anyway. The venue does say they are happy to advise and assist with any special needs, so we shall see.

It's on at 7pm at our localish theatre (45 minutes away) so as much as I would like to do it - it won't be happening as it would be too much for him at that time of night

Good luck. I've been thinking about taking my two boys when it comes round to us.

Fingers crossed for you and ds. :)

Hi, thanks for all your messages.

We are back, and he did it!! (And I had a lovely coffee and a shop Grin)

We had booked seats by the aisle and in the dress circle (incidently friend who booked mentioned why we needed aisle seats and we got a 'carer goes free' ticket, not done that before as feel a bit shy about it, but they offered!). This avoided the audience participation too.

Never been to that theatre before but it was fab - big space at the back and the lady there said yes of course DS could come and stand or hide there if need be. She also said there were spare seats futher back for any children who found it too noisy.

DS came out buzzing and had really enjoyed it (he is 9). DS used his ear plugs but not all the time. At one point he had to go out because he was scared, but there was a monitor in the bar so he could see that bit of the show from there.

So proud, because he actually went back in after that bit. It was well worth it, despite the fact that DS had been so anxious beforehand he really kicked off and kicked and hit me and DS1 badly before we left home. My arm hurt all afternoon (need to try and look out that thread with restraint tips).

For anyone thinking of going, DH said the following: it is not full of bangs but there is a loudish noise at the beginning (more a crack than a bang, someone is asked up to press the Start button). At the end of the first half there is a loud bang, but there is lots of warning leading up to it (DS was out of there!). Half way through the second half a hydrogen balloon pops, this is more a flare than a bang though. The rest of the show is fun, silly science stuff, and quite a few TV reports from various parts of the Science Museum.

Hope that helps anyone else thinking of going.

Big thanks for your report andperseand. We're going next Saturday and I have the same worry. Really really helpful to be able to give that information to ds beforehand.

andperseand · 07/02/2011 09:39

Glad to help - hope it goes well Olivia (maybe check about the monitor, I have no idea if all theatres do this now).

Think we are going to be brave and book a Horrible Histories next!
