ADHD? What next

Hi my DS1 6 years old had an assessment last Friday and the doctor said that he felt that my DS1 had ADHD and that they were going to formally assess him for it. That they were going to send the school observation and questionnaire forms and that they would be sending us the same for home. That we had to fill them in and we would be sent an appointment for 8 weeks time to start the assessments.

He gave us a little booklet to take home and read and see if any of it relates to our DS1, and I would say 85-90% of it is DS1 down to a T!

Can anyone tell me what to expect next?

Thanks :)

Hi there Emjxxx. My ds is also 6 and we are at nearly exactly the same point as you. I posted a very similar question last Friday.

That means I can't offer a great deal of knowledge but I can offer solidarity if that is of any use.

My thread went like this if this is of any use

I know it doesn't answer your particular question.

I would be really interested to hear what knowledge is shared with you and what your experience is.

Wishing you good luck with your ds's care. Smile

My ds was diagnosed ADHD at a similar age by a developmental paediatrician. He also has input from a speech & language therapist and an occupational therapist. The 'Connor's' questionnaire is lengthy but will give the doctor assessing your ds a good insight prior to meeting him. The school will also complete one - expect theirs to be much worse than yours. The results were plotted on a graph for my ds and discussed with DH and I. Our son played in another room while we chatted. The doctor then talked 1:1 to our ds and did a few cognitive excersises with him (mainly to test attention/concentration and distractibility level) He got a dx of mild/moderate. We then discussed treatments, which to be honest, with a doctor the only thing they can really prescribe is medication .... we chose not to. They were very supportive as he was not considered severe enough. We had a lovely doctor and the thought of the process was worse than it actually was. The important thing for us wasn't necessarily getting him the dx and a 'label', but getting him the support he needed and deserved at school. Good luck!

Hi there Emjxxx just wondering how you were getting on and if any progress had been made?
We are still waiting for an appointment here.
