Epsom salts and ASD?

I saw this mentioned on another thread but didn't want to highjack.

DS insists on a bath every night but I find he gets quite worked up by it. I'm having real trouble with his sleep at the moment and everyone seems to be pushing Melatonin which I am not comfortable with. It has been a really rough year so this is unsurprising but I'd love to know if it could help.

Epsom salts were suggested to me on here a while ago... And for us they do work.

Have a bath, drop or two of lavender and some Epsom salts... As part of the wind down routine.

( obviously from other thread we now have a different issue lol < bangs head against wall>

is it the bath that is winding him up or is wound up before he gets in?

SuperTheoryofSuperEverything · 03/02/2011 20:06

Thanks, I will definitely try this tomorrow night!

It's a bit of both, he gets very agitated after dinner, I've tried cutting the bath out but oh my did I regret that....

Sorry to barge in, could you tell me what benefits Epsom salts have on ASD?? I remember seeing it on a thread ages ago and meant to follow this up but can't for the life of me find it. I remember thinking I must do this and then havn't got round to it.

SuperTheoryofSuperEverything · 03/02/2011 20:13

Not barging in at all, don't worry

it's got Mg which is relaxing as well as sulphates that help to remove some toxins

mumgoingcrazy · 03/02/2011 20:30

My DD's bath together, would this affect DD1 (NT), or just in a relaxing way?

Also is it relaxing for bathtime only, or generally?

Sorry, last question and I'm now Blush that I've barged in again, DD2 likes to drink the bathwater. She's such a bad drinker I let her as I figure some liquid is better than none. Bad idea to do Epsom salts so would it make no difference?

No more hijacking I promise

Here is the link form the other thread,
Epsom Salts
I have some ES in the bathroom, they can be used internally as a laxative, but you prob not want that. I don't think they are harmful in low doses, I put some in my bath occasionally too when I have a soak. I also use them for my ds of course and like you said on another thread, I also like to try different things on him.
Big tub from Boots was about £3.

Thecarrotcake · 03/02/2011 20:53

Ahhh what has already been said..:) ( sorry was on pm's)

mumgoingcrazy · 03/02/2011 20:59

Actually DD2 suffers badly from constipation, so if Epsom Salts help with this I'm sold!

Will it do any harm to DD1 (NT) in her bath?

Thecarrotcake · 03/02/2011 21:03

Is fine for NTs ( we now all use it in the family:))

mumgoingcrazy · 03/02/2011 21:10

Thank you!!

IndigoBell · 03/02/2011 23:05

I put a cup in every second night.

The whole family use it now.

I buy it in bulk off the internet.

SuperTheoryofSuperEverything · 04/02/2011 01:37

Thanks to everyone, this is really useful.

DS has very loose bowels and no diet changes have sorted it, given the laxative effect is epsom sals not wise?

SuperTheoryofSuperEverything · 04/02/2011 01:37

I use it myself after heavy training, amazing.

mumgoingcrazy · 04/02/2011 11:06

Well Boots didn't have it so I got it in Holland and barratt £8 ouch!

Indigobell, why every other night? How do I know how much and how often??

Think I will get in bulk after today!

IndigoBell · 04/02/2011 11:30

When I researched it that was the guidelines I found. ( But can't find the link now. )

I buy mine from here

A number of sites seem to say 'three times a week' so that's what I've gone with....

mumgoingcrazy · 04/02/2011 11:39

Thank you, first lot tonight then.

yes, a chance to absorb some Mg through the skin possibly, and a bit of detox effect, I think of it as a spa treatment ;)
My understanding is that eczema could be diet related

On the box it says for sensitive conditions incl eczema.

Well had our first Epsom salts bath tonight and both girls are out like a light, fingers crossed DD2 stays asleep. Hopefully not just a coincidence!!

can you add bubble bath as well as id love to try it with my ASD DS as he gets very anxious and sleeps badly but refuses to have a bath without bubbles.

IndigoBell · 05/02/2011 07:32

Yes you can add bubbles.

The salt just dissolves in the water and he won't even know it's there.
