Background

For the past 12 months I have worked with the most fantastic little boy in pre school.... he recently has been diognosed with leukememia, went to see him today and it was like seeing a goast he was the shell of himself it was horrible.

Anyways:

My question is how long does the stamenting process take? It was just about to be started before he fell ill .. he should starts school in september.

Sad Average sm time is around 6 months providing LA agree to assess first time of asking.

Poor little boy, I hope he makes a good recovery.

My Ds2 has a statement, and it took 6/7 months to do. I was told at the time that it was the average time.

Yes they should but it is another pressure for them...

I would add that my advice would be to get through the leukaemia bit first-the only reason I say that is that (depending on the type he has) he may be inhospital fairly intensively for around 6 months (AML) or for 2 years on a much less intensive basis (ALL). The treatment time can be very overwhelming with little emotional strength left to even deal with daily "normal" worries, let alone a statementing process. Again, imvho, parents of very sick children like this kind of need to deal with the sad "will he survive" question and all else can fade into relative insignificance.
My heart goes out to them and I really hope all goes well with his treatment.

Also may be worth remembering that his immune system may well be too fragile to start school at the allotted time.

so sorry to hear this Sad Usually the advice given here is for a parent to start the statement process but maybe the preschool could help enormously by setting the ball in motion for them to relieve some of the pressure.

Ye school can wait ... his parents just have an end goal for him that when he is well enough he will start school..... They are (the medical staff) hopful he will be able to start school in some way .. his parents are great too just down to earth good people...

it also might be worth noting that he might not need/get a statement as there are a lot of issues around getting statements on medical needs only. As others have said i would concentrate on getting him better first and then once well enough to return to school then see what help he might need, unless he has other issues that will get him a statement independently.

I remember you posting when he was first diagnosised. Im glad you got to see him and im sure you brightened his day.
I wouldnt worry too much about school, he wont be well enough for a while and best to think about getting him well.

poptyping1 · 02/02/2011 23:33

thank you all for your help....lisad123 it was good to see him horrible but good....just seeing him got me thinking about school thats all ..... they are so great him Mum and Dad it's such a difficult time for them...when I arrived she gave me a belated Christmas present couldn't beleve it it was so nice of them to think of me.... every turn they have text or rang to let me know what is going on etc...duno why really I am worrying about school I will just think about getting him better ad helping the family in whatever way I can ... I will pop up to see him again at half term hopefully if he is well enough.
