what is expected from a parent at the annual statement review?

dd's first statement review is coming up in a few weeks. On Friday the SENCO asked me if I would like to contribute anything to be submitted before the meeting to the LEA. She wants to send it off tomorrow or Tuesday. What is expected of me at this meeting? Is it ok to turn up with notes / questions on the day or would that be considered bad form? I might add that we are happy with her provision apart from one or two minor things which are to sort with the school directly rather than needing to be part of the statement.

You can provide a written statement of how you think your DS is progressing, any difficulties that have reduced / escalated, what sort of support you want increased / decreased, future plans etc - essentially your view as to the last year and what you want in the future.

Turn up with notes - OK.

Questions - that's why you're there to have any questions answered.

It's a diagloue between you and those who deliver the support.

thank you, I spend last night reviewing the statement and have produced something to hand in. Smile

just had a quick look, we are always given a form to complete, although I always type one up as the boxes are never big enough. These are the heading, if this helps.

Are you satisfied with your child?s progress over the last year?
What do you think are her main needs for the coming year?
Is your child worried about any areas of school life?
Please comment on how the provision provided has helped to meet your child?s needs.
Are there any other issues that you would like discussed at the review meeting?

you should receive a copy of any reports written about 2 weeks in advance of the meeting so you have time to prepare any notes or questions for the day properly.

We had dd2's review just before x-mas, i went through the statement and wrote down anything i felt needed to be changed or wasn't being met, i also wrote down how i thought dd2 was getting on and how school could do more to help her (extra supports at lunch ect,,).

thank you for all the info. I haven't had a form but I went through the statement, commented on the objectives and if they are being met. Went through all of the statement hightlighting bits that need lookign at again. I hope it doesn't come across as too critical, we are happy with the school and what they are doing but there a few bits that need looking at.

Would take along Mr HBofB if at all possible as such meetings can feel quite intimidating if you attend alone. He can also be an advocate and ask questions of the school.

Do take notes before and during the meeting.
