i have twins, one with a servere ld and the other with dyspraxia and gdd,and mild ld as official diagnosis,a friend of mine told me how dore had diagnosed thier child and were fantastic, although they didnt complete course.im highly suspisious as not one professional i ve dealt with has told me of them, but also deep down,if im honest, if theres anychance they can improve their skills then id leap at it. can anyone here tell me anything about them? if so fab why not recommended by the professionals involved with my kids, and why not available for them as obviously much cheaper than all other services involved already?? what really made me highly suspicious is they claim to cure??? dyslexia and dyspraxia, and advise not available through nhs as not researched enough and that they hope this will eventually be the case, anything anyone real can share with me would be much appreciated..thanks x

I made enquiries with dore about 6 years ago... Basically they sent a salesman around who showed a DVD and wanted us to sign up.. It was very expensive IMO.

There maybe people on here who thought yay to it though.

Have you thought about the BIBIC route?
Basically I honestly think you'd be better off with an OT and SALT ( private if you can afford ) to help you out.

didn't they go kaput a few years back ? Run as a business and the assessment/treatment wasn't cheap. Friend's ds did it for a while and the regime was a series of exercises similar to those given by our (NHS) OT. His dyslexia improved but it wasn't the only thing they were doing.

I have researched them and think they sound good.

I have had huge success with retained reflex therapy and think they are both based on the same principles. I would (and have) tried retained reflex therapy first, but if you can't do that, then I would try DORE.

My DD with LD is starting retained reflex therapy today, if it doesn't work for her I will be going to DORE.

There are loads and loads of reasons why professionals don't recommend things that work. Mostly they can't. There's huge amounts of money at stake, and huge amounts of politics paid by what is in effect a very big beuractratic company.

Here are all the things I have tried for myself or my family that definately have worked and are defiantely not recommended by the NHS:

  • Buteyko Method
  • Omega Fish Oil
  • Epsom Bath Salts
  • Reflexology
  • Retained Reflex Therapy
  • Auditory Integration Treatment

After I cured my Asthma with the Buteyko method I no longer care what the NHS do or don't recommend. That is just one more piece of data I use in my research, but doesn't carry more weight than others.

You also have to remember that if something works after it is recommended, it also worked before it was recommended.

Most of the complaints about the DORE method seem to be about their marketing or the nature of their claims. I haven't ever found a medical article that says they understand the principles the DORE method is based on and there is no way it could possibly work (from a medical point of view)

Having said all that, if you're in London I would try the Sound Learning Centre before trying DORE.

I am surprised they are still going as a while ago they were discredited because their research had not been properly carried out and therefore their claims were found to be bogus.
They might have done new research but I would give them a wide berth.

Google "Bad Science" for more info.

IndigoBell · 30/01/2011 16:56

I googled bad science, and all the criticisms seemed to be about their marketing and the nature or their studies - but none of the bad science articles actually disputed the science behind it and said that they thought it couldn't work - just that they thought it hadn't been proved to work.

A big difference.

There are lots of reasons why people discredit new stuff - most of it nothing to do with whether or not it works.

If I've done it right this page gives more detail.

Should have added that if you are going to spend £2,000 I would have thought you would want to have some idea of its efficacy.

IndigoBell · 30/01/2011 18:14

Nah, I'd spend £2000 in a heartbeat if I thought it might help one of my children.

Then again, I probably earn more than you do.....

And a large part of your decision making is going to revolve around how hard it is for you to afford £2000.

LightBlue - can you please reference a paper that actually claims that DORE is ineffective (for everyone), as opposed to claiming that the studies and marketing is flawed.

lightthebluetouchpaper · 30/01/2011 18:19

No and I can't find one that says it is effective either. The point was that the studies they themselves did were flawed and if they have done more recent ones I don't know about them.
I'm going now. Have had my say.
Amd yes, you almost certainly earn more than me as I am retired.Grin

thanks for all your answers, i only did very very minimal research b4 i posted here, and i did think is it just similar to ot salt etc and my children are having that through nhs and ot made massive improvments for my son, but has been a bit hit and miss with daughter as a lot of recommended excersizes etc are beyond what she can do at the moment and she is also very resistant to follow them as is her nature! maybe need to do some more detailed rsearch before i make any decisions, it is a huge amount of money and we do have a very large family with only one income coming in but as mentioned above if i though this could even provide the tiniest bit of improvment then i ll pay whatever i needed to as i expect many parents would.thanks again x
