Sometimes being the mum of a disabled child can be very frustrating, and so tiring

My dd is 16, with a 5 yo sister, who reads very well. Of course my 16 yo wants read as well if not better than her sister, but I don't think I am the one for her to practice with. I really want to help her, not sure I have any patience left. I feel so tired all the time and then of course guilty for not enjoying trying to help her.

i think your post title sums it up - it is incredibly difficult

Best wishes

Yes i think many of us here can identify with the thread title, i only have one six year old so dont have the sibling stuff to contend with, hope her school or college are helpful if shes suddenly getting into reading

Totally understand where you are coming from. It is difficult with disabled kids and does get frustrating. I try to spend time playing or showing my ds things but he has very little concentration so i end up giving up. Then of course you do feel guilty.

Totally understand your frustration Shaz. I have 2 severely disabled boys, one 12 one nearly 14.
I also have 3 older kids.
I have always said my youngest should be an only child as he takes about 90% attention. But he has the concentration of a gnat on speed, he asks you to do something, by the time you've got the thing to do, he runs away cos his mind is elsewhere.
Older boy is more of a loner but sometimes I wish there were 4 or 5 of us so i could give him more attention!

unpa1, poor you! i find extremely difficult with 1 ds severley disabled and you have 2. it must be sooo difficult for you. Are the 3 older kids a good help. I have other 2 ds also, 12yr and 8yr. They adore there brother though it must be difficult for them. They do not get time they need with me because have to spend 90% with there brother. It would be great if you could split yourself in half! Im sure you do your best with your ds and love them with all your heart. Well done you for managing 5 dc. :)

Hotpot, how about setting aside some time for dd say 20mins and telling her this is reading time and then you have to do - abc! Does she go to school/day centre, could someone there not spend time on reading with her? What about her sister can she maybe spend a little time too, maybe they'd both enjoy. Good luck, dont be so hard on yourself for feeling tired, we all do at times, you are human and trying to run a home, go to work and bring up dcs is difficult enough without having a dc with extra needs. Your doing a fab job, hang in there! :)
