Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Anyone got any good news to cheer us all up?

I'll start.....

My DD managed to get the lid off a tomato ketchup bottle tonight. Been showing her for years and now she's managed it herself!

Lots of lovely good news!

Proud of DS tonight because when a big anxiety attack came over him he was able to panickly ask for a story cd to be put on and sat and let it calm him. It is such a big step for him to be able to suggest something to help. He is now sitting up in bed by himself listening to the rest of the tape Smile.

DS got 9/10 'good behaviour' stickers today at school - that's a first and a turnaround after a horrendous few weeks. Also he has just fallen asleep by 10pm after listening to a kids relaxation bedtime story (usually 11pm or after) which he loved. Feeling much more positive! Smile

LollipopViolet · 27/01/2011 22:23

Well, it's not REALLY sn, but me and a friend are now entered into our local Race for Life event in September.

zen1 · 27/01/2011 22:38

Really encouraging to read about all the progress DCs are making Smile.

DS3 put 3 words together yesterday "tur t'on" (turn it on). Lights and light switches are his favourite thing so he loves them being turned on and off.

Not really good news in the short term but dd's teacher has been given enough rope and on Tuesday I'm going to hang her with it. Long term though dd's IEP's will be followed and documented to the letter. "slowly slowly catchee monkey Grin"as they say

Thecarrotcake · 27/01/2011 23:16

Mines similar to ASDs good news.. I now have printed and signed to rope to hang with!

And ds didn't hit anyone this week. :)

yoshysmum · 28/01/2011 09:15

My ds has finally started to write and try to spell phonetically [sp] and he is enjoying it too. Up to now he has hated it and it has been a huge battle.

Senco finally did ds's IEP after 4 months of waiting. Hooray Smile

Phlebas · 28/01/2011 09:49

both ABA tutors are off sick (all week! grrrrrrr!) which means I could afford to buy the children new shoes & coats so they don't look so much like street urchins.

(ds is making us laugh loads, in the bath last night he said 'dd2 is smallest, ds is medium, Mummy is big and Daddy is MASSIVE' ... he then compared dd2 to a cute baby sabretooth tiger! Grin )

willowthecat · 28/01/2011 09:58

ds changed an answer - I mean I asked 'Where do we get lollipops?' and he said 'freezer' then corrected himself to 'shop' when he realised we were nowhere near a freezer or home ! Yes he does eat frozen lollies in winter ! It is the first time he has ever self corrected a verbal answer.

auntevil · 28/01/2011 10:15

ASD and Carrot - had to lol at the 'rope'. We need a self satisfied/told you so and you didn't believe me/smug/ ner, ner, na, ner ner emoticon.
I love these threads because you can sense the real joy at events that some parents would look bemused at.

IndigoBell · 28/01/2011 11:05

Just got an email from school - they have arranged for an older child to read with DD before school!

I'm so pleased / relieved. It seems like the IEP meeting I just had has actually produced something....

School are very close now to doing absolutely everything they can Grin

(And thanks to everyone on this board who continually shows me how to and gives me energy to keep improving things for my kids :) )

proudmum74 · 28/01/2011 11:17

These are all really lovely stories - i wanted to add that my dd has just started to try and copy actions - I got a wave out of her this morning & it has made my day!! Smile

Triggles · 28/01/2011 11:32

Other than the obvious thrill of finally finishing our DLA claim forms and sending it in yesterday, DS2 made a spontaneous reference to something we'd done previously yesterday.

We were in the car, going by PC World, and DS2 said "mummy and (DS2's name) went PC World". Now, I know this sounds silly, but even though he's still referring to himself in the third person, it's the FIRST TIME that he has actually commented on something that has happened previously (we went there the other day to get printer ink) without being specifically asked. It was just out of the blue. Just about rear ended another car I was so distracted by this. Grin

loulou77 · 28/01/2011 12:38

Slight hijack...just wanted to thank IndigoBell for her fish oil trick...tuna being one of DS's only foods!

x

loulou77 · 28/01/2011 12:42

And these are such lovely success stories! DS didn't scream today when I changed the timetable and said we'd have to postpone a library trip to later (the baby was crying and needed to go home to bed)...although he's reminding me every 5 minutes

starfish71 · 28/01/2011 12:59

These are cheering me up! Took DS2 to a special needs gymnastic session, it was fantastic! He had a good go at everything and the staff and facilities are brill. Didn't know about it until yesterday when one of the mums at school mentioned it. Now if I can get my DS1 doing something I will really smile!

Marne · 28/01/2011 13:02

Dd2 took her medicine with out throwing up or spitting it in my face Grin.

Dd1 has been asked if she would like to joing the football club in town (under 8's), she replied 'only if no one hurts me' Smile.

badkitty · 28/01/2011 13:45

DS isolated his index finger and pressed a button with it!!

And we are going to see a mainstream nursery where apparently they are really good with SN children so hopefully will be able to get him in there for later in the year.

proudmum74 · 28/01/2011 13:49

That's great news badkitty - my dd starts mainstream nursery in 5 weeks time & I'm so nervous! Although they do have other kids with SN & their Senco is lovely, so she should love it.

newlife4us · 28/01/2011 14:02

After some devastating news on Monday re DD, this is really cheering me up.

Thank you everyone for sharing your lovely stories - keep them coming!

Yes! Both boys came home with 'tifikits' (ceretificates) yesterday. Eldest for trying hard at reading and youngest for being helpful! :)

Ben10isthespawnofthedevil · 29/01/2011 12:29

DS has been at trampolining club for 8 weeks and I thought he was doing really badly as his coordination is so much worse than everyone elses... he got awarded the first two badges today!! Smile

MotherJack · 29/01/2011 17:14

A letter has come in the post today, telling me the results of DS's CT scan and MRI. He has good space for CSF flow and no ongoing compression of the back of the spinal cord/brainstem and his head/neck junction appears stable. His horrible surgery may yet be worthwhile Smile

Oh, and a lovely family gave him an absolutely beautiful swing set for him after I placed a wanted ad on Freegle. We picked it up today. (On the downside, he has asked every 5 minutes if I can put it together, but it's a full construction job that needs anchoring Grin)

BialystockandBloom · 29/01/2011 21:38

Love threads like this Smile

Had a good week here too - found out the SA for ds (asd) has been agreed, had his first SALT assessment which showed his language is pretty on par with nt peers, he has shown some great play with other children at nursery, and played really nicely with his little sister. Even when he told her to "buzz off" Grin

(btw phlebas love your post - we've been doing sizes recently with ABA too, and for days we had to affirm whether everything was teeny, tiny, small, medium or huuuuge Grin)

TheCrunchyside · 29/01/2011 22:59

ds was upstairs playing with his cars while i mumsnetted did housework and when i went up later i saw he had taken himself off for a wee in the toilet.

He has been toilet trained for over 18 months but this is the first time he has not needed to tell me first or be prompted/assisted in some way.

now if I could just persuade him to poo on toilet rather than in nappy at night I'll really crack open the champagne
