Hello everyone,

Hope someone can help me out a little, as im in two minds as to whether i should take DD to the doctors this afternoon.

She had athetoid quad CP and has problems with excess saliva most of the time, but when she gets a cold it goes into overdrive! There's constant streams of it and it worse when she coughs as she spit huge bubbles of it out and it seems to frustrate her quite a bit.

I think she just has a cold i.e runny nose, cough etc. No high temperature though.

DH is concerned as there is a slight wheeze in the cough and you can hear it slightly when she breathes.

I don't really want to faff her about taking her to the doctors (its raining quite heavily too and you can never park on the carpark) only to be told its a cold and to carry on with calpol etc and she just wants to slob in her pj's watching cbeebies.

Anyone have any ideas as to what i should do?

Your poor dd. I would wrap her up and take her to the doc just to be on the safe side in case it has gone onto her chest.

My dd has slight athetoid CP and also gets lots of saliva with a cold. She gets a terrible cough which make her sick.

Hope your dd is better soon beldaran.

the saliva sound normal, dd(athetoid cp) always had that, she has had the op now but when unwell she still dribbles a bit, she also sound wheezy when she has a cough or cold, I think it is where she is not able to "clear" it like most people can.
can you ring your Doc and speak to him, mine will sometimes advise over the phone, saves the big drag out.

thanks for your replies.

Have spoken to NHS direct and they have advised to take her down because of the wheeze.

So brollies at the ready and off we go.

Glad to know that the dribbling is "normal", jimmy can i ask what operation this was?

she had her saliva glands repositioned, it really has made a difference. no more wet chin.

Just adding to this thread hope you pick it up as the thread is a bit old now. When you wipe your childs face try dabbing rather than swiping across the mouth as the swiping movement stimulates the salivary glands and more saliva is then produced and the whole process begins again!

My DS has athetoid CP as well and exactly what your DD experiences, my DS also..When my DS had the wheezing sound..the GP prescribed inhaler to help ease the breathing and it has helped alot! My DS is not asthmatic..Moreso my DS is on a medication that helps ease the excess saliva!speak to ur DS Peadiatrics to discuss options to help with this!HTH!
