Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

breezi v tripp trapp

Good Evening.

I recently discussed with my DD's OT, the need for a larger high chair.

I had investigated the Tripp Trapp, but OT suggested Breezi was better.

I didn't think to ask why (there is a bit of a price difference!).

Can anyone tell me why a Breezi would be superior to a Tripp Trapp?

Thank you.

Look the same to me.

Go with the cheaper.

herjazz · 21/01/2011 22:55

What's breezi? Is that the babydan one that's about 70 quid or the one in the sn catalogues that's v v expensive?

We got the babydan one from a charity shop. It's fine. Does the job. We use non slip mats- them floppy vinyl things on the seat so that dd doesn't slip forward so easily

elliejjtiny · 22/01/2011 01:46

We have a breezi and I think it's more supportive than the tripp trapp.

goingroundthebend4 · 22/01/2011 07:01

yes and theres more addtional options for the Breezi than the trip trap

as trip trap is more of a standard chair where breezi is often used more for sn.Ds has pelvic support and a seating cushion plus pommel so he does sits up better .Ds is 5.5 and thats his school chair his home chair is a star chair

Marne · 22/01/2011 09:10

We have been adviced to get one for dd2 (by OT), i will take a look at the breezi.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 22/01/2011 10:19

we borrowed a brezzi from my sister once and then brought a tripp trap, really couldnt see any difference tbh.
Ps have a tripp trapp for sale if anyone wants to try one ;)

Marne · 22/01/2011 10:23

How much would you like for it Lisa?

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 22/01/2011 10:44

£50 plus post? it does have babyset too, but you could stick hat on ebay but like the support the larger set gives with the baby set on

isw · 22/01/2011 10:59

Another Tripp Trapp vote, we still use the back support from the babyset for dd 2.11 with cp (spastic quad) Hope that helps

Marne · 22/01/2011 11:00

I will speek to dh when he gets back from work Smile.

r3dh3d · 22/01/2011 11:14

Two differences (we have 2 breezis for DD1 and a TT for DD2)

The obvious one is the ability to attach various support bits, castors etc.

If you don't need those (we have the lap belt and it is handy tbh) the main and HUGELY important difference is safety. The Breezi has much longer ski bits on the bottom. Which makes it hard to push it over backwards by putting your feet on the table. That is a known safety issue with the Tripp Trapp and when they designed the Breezi for kids with SN they specifically changed that.

r3dh3d · 22/01/2011 11:18

Just to add - support needs can change as they get older. But they mostly attach to the seat and you can buy the various breezi bits separately and slot them into your TT.

Also would highly recommend getting the tray. Which also fits on a TT. V expensive, sometimes you can find TT ones (independant manufacturer) on ebay or maybe look at the design and get someone to make one. But they are invaluable.

deepbreath · 22/01/2011 19:59

We have a Breezi on loan from dd's OT. Main differences are the longer, velco seatbelt on the Breezi, and the one dd uses has a padded pommel to stop her from sliding off the seat.

I looked at Mothercare's own brand one, and it seems just as sturdy. The price difference was massive though!

bsac15 · 23/01/2011 22:09

Wow Ladies!

Thanks for your response.

R3dh3d - thanks for the finer details.
Definitely need a lap belt to hold back pelvis - chair reins are not enough.

Deepbreath - I shall investigate M-don't-C!

breezi much better - the corner insert is great. dd uses that at the moment and it makes for a good sitting position. Also the breezi lap strap is very good and sturdy. Also breezi can have a tray. Tripp trapp is fine, we have for my other dd and she sits really well in it but would not offer the extras needed for dd2 who has cerebral palsy. do you need to pay for it yourself? we had the breezi rep come out and check everythng dd needed - OT then sorted out funding.

bsac15 · 23/01/2011 22:42

HBOB!

OT has told me they cannot supply or fund?

I am VERY shocked at the price, but if it lasts for the next 10yr - pounds per year isn't much.

How much am I actually allowed to ask help with?

We've been given a Swifty via wheelchair service, but now need a highchair & specialist car seat.

I can save up some money but cannot afford to buy everything.

And I don't think we fit the categories for 'funding'.
(no offence meant to ANYONE).

OT provided one of ours.

It's a postcode lottery, but the way it works here, OT puts all equipment down as being "on loan" because it comes out of a different budget line, and so is a capital investment rather than an expense. So technically it's been on loan to us for the last five years. I'm not sure what the writedown is for severely gnawed wooden chairs, lol, but I imagine they will have financially forgotten about it fairly soon so in practice it belongs to us.

r3dh3d · 23/01/2011 23:14

Car seats are rarely funded by OT/SS/whoever ime, but because of that lots of charities will fund them. Many will be local so see if you can get a list - Social Services might provide one as they excel at spending other people's money.

goingroundthebend4 · 24/01/2011 06:27

Hmm ot provide one fir school and Ss ot provide our home equipment which tends to be the way it works

We currentley have star chair at home for ds but breezi with added bits for school

Car seats sadly not funded here so have to buy our own I'm getting ready to spend out for new one for ds3 as he's about ready come out his 2nd stage one and us not tall enough for booster even with back and he ends up slumping in them

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 24/01/2011 11:22

we don't meet the criteria for things like the family find etc but we did manage to get funding for a special trike from our local Lion's club. I have found that the little local charities like Round Table/Lions' club are keen to help local children. I wrote a letter and put a picture of dd in with it. It felt weird but to be honest it was the only way to do it.

On thinking about it I think it was social services who funded the chair. I had asked about stair rails and toilet alterations and whilst they were here my OT got them to look at seating as well. I think you need to ask for as much as you can because if you don't ask they seldom offer!

beldaran · 24/01/2011 11:26

For car seats i would highly recommend contacting Newlife. Just had our Recaro Start 2 before Christmas and the whole process went through in 4 weeks (we have had equipment funded by Newlife before so dont know if that decreased the time).

They only asked for a £50 donation which i was quite happy to pay on a car seat that was close to £1000 Shock.

DanceInTheDark · 24/01/2011 17:28

OT provided our Breezi for DS2. It is almost identical to Tripp Trap but Breezi seemed heavier and the bit of the leg that goes on the floor is longer i think (been a long time since we had the borrowed tripp trapp in the house!)

DS2 has leg supports on his breezi that kind of keep him upright and sat in the centre - does that make sense? There are other supports that can be used though. The lap belt is fantastic - VERY strong and sturdy and is thick too.

bsac15 · 25/01/2011 21:08

overwhelmed by your on-going responses!

Beldaran - thanks for newlife tip - now going to check them out.

Thanks again.

my ds age 10 needed seat that i could sit him in so he was in no danger when im busy doing other things, was given hard rock chair which will suit for good few years as is adjustable, OT arranged funding though i waited over a year for it (attached invoice showed was £1000) which i could never have afforded. Also asked for car seat as he gets out of seat belt, was provided with (again from ot) houdini harness which he uses with normal booster seat. Have to say both are life savers :) Good luck
