I have a 30yr old son who is severely disabled. Up until October 2008 (Breaking point) we had received no services from our local authority.

When I became suspicious of a social workers motives I decided to research for myself through the internet ?Fair Access to Care?. I discovered that my son had been entitled to a Direct Payment going back to 2003 when it became a duty of the Local Authority to offer an alternative way of meeting care needs.

It has been a real struggle, but my son now receives over £700 per week to pay for his care, and we can choose how his needs are met and by whom.

We have complained, and recently the Ombudsman has found maladministration by the council. It is simply down to the social worker involved and the eligibility criteria they assess you as being in i.e. substantial/critical.

They will not offer direct payments, you must ask and stand your ground. If you are exhausted and not up to it find an advocate on the councils website or better still get a solicitor

Sounds familiar. My daughter has quad cp, doubly incontinent, cant sit, stand, walk.
When i first asked for help from ss i was given 2 hours a week of agency help. They sent a different person out once a week for 2 hours...my daughter hated it and i wasn't happy.

If it hadn't been for my Mum finding out about direct payements i would have been none the wiser. I asked our social worker about them and after going to panel my daughter was awarded them. I now employ someone myself and stretch the funding as far as i can. It works out to allow me 8 hours of help a week, but thats Monday to Friday,no weekend or half term help and its not enough to allow holiday or sick cover.

I know i am extremely lucky to get this though so i am not complaining (my daughter doesn't go to school so she is home full time and the help is so valuable as one of my other children has ASD also).

I think its terrible that not enough people are told they're entitled to Direct Payments and i also would recommend people ask about/for them, they've been a god send for me.
