Ive got all my evidence together, which really a lot is what was in the original application that the LA turned down BUT ive highlighted specific parts now and highlighted the teachers comments especially stating about my sons difficulties and that he needs constant support to work etc. Also included the GP letter to camhs asking them to assess my son for ASD/behavioural disturbance and the problems with schooling. Im still waiting for the paed letter stating that my son needs assessing. Included hospital letters with his diagnosis' and the plans for future tests etc. Also included a photocopy highlighting the part of the SEN COP that states if a medical condition stops a child assessing school etc then they can assessed.

Question is: Do i just do a covering paragraph tying the evidence in together? I just want to get across that my son needs assessing because there is an underlying behavioural/learning difficulty that needs assessing to find out why my son doesnt like school (school say he happy), doesnt want to attend school (managed to do half hour every day this week and today actually got him in the classroom for half hour) and also the medical problems make accessing education difficult as this affects his behaviour after hospital admissions and he gets ill a lot so his attendance is low (about 60% i think). its a viscious circle because the medical impacts the learning and i got this across clearly last time and he was turned down Sad

Any help would be greatly appreciated.x

Please find our documentation enclosed for statutory assessment.

We are requesting statutory assessment on the following grounds:

  1. x is a great danger of school refusing and therefore social exclusion. It is our wish, as parents, that he attends and is happy within school. At the time of writing he has refused to attend school for x amount of time over x amount of time. This is having a significant impact on his academic attainment.
  1. x is currently going through the process of being diagnosed for ASD/behavioural and severe specific learning difficulties. It is likely that a diagnosis will be made. x's rigid thinking, challenging behaviour and weak social skills (sorry making this bit up as I don't know but bung in whatever is relevant) impacts negatively on his education and the education of others within the classroom setting. We feel that x needs funding for one to one support and small group support to scaffold his learning.
  1. x is diagnosed with y medical conditions. This entails frequent absences due to (bung in whatever he gets) and hospital visits. This results in disrupted learning and a lack of continuity for x. Currently he is z years behind his peers in literacy and numeracy and it is likely that this will increase in the future. When x does return to school he finds following the continuity of lesson structures very hard as he has missed a significant amount of teaching. This has lead to high anxiety levels on his part and an increased risk of school refusing (see 1). His behaviours within school become more rigid and oppositional/challenging/emotional (put in what fits) and the school are struggling to cope with this as evidenced by (put in evidence).

It is our concern that should the situation continue, x will fall further and further behind. We feel that input at this stage which supports his behavioural, social and emotional welfare as well as his literacy and numeracy aquisition may well reduce the amount of support he will need in the future. At present he requires constant one to one supervision to enable him to complete any work. If the one to one is not present then he is unable to work and becomes challenging and disruptive to others.

The following evidence has been submitted.

Then just submit it.

You must be precise, objective and evidenced based otherwise it will be turned down again. Have you the support of the school. Good luck and hope this helps a bit. Sorry I know nothing about your son so have been a bit generic but take out or use what you will.

thankyou very much! that is fantastic! school are supportive and also want him assessed. meeting ed psyche at next tac meeting on 8th february.

hes actually quiet at school when he goes in and doesnt show behavioural problems as i cant physically get him on the severe days (if i did they would see the behaviour). i experience the behaviour at home as does his father when he has him and my mother when he visits her, we know when its an eggshell day.

teacher says hes quiet, polite, doesnt concentrate at all, doesnt complete any work unless got full support which they cant provide and when they can needs huge encouragement to do anything at all, no confidence in his abilities, missing whole class teaching because of frequent trips to the toilet and get drinks (medical). do you think the fact the behaviour is when he leaves school where hes bottled it up will go against him getting assessed? thank you ever so much.x

You need to use key words like 'passive' 'disinterested'

so: x's behaviour at school is passive but he is displaying extreme reluctance to tackle work at even the most basic level and will try avoidance tactics unless coaxed to do so by a one to one. He is reported by school as (whatever they say - showing very little focus and concentration) in class which means he misses essential instructions and key information. This is having a negative impact on his learning.

His medical needs are also providing a major barrier to his learning (this is a phrase you can use a lot!)

Good luck!

brandy Get the reasons from the CoP and use as many words from it as possible. Use whole chunks of text word for word if you like.

great thankyou flyingmum! x

startingafresh, so rather than just include the photocopy pages of the medical parts of the CoP, actually quote the relevant parts word for word in my letter? boy this is gona be worse than the essays i have to write! hope it has a good outcome. il start tomorow and when my son is at his dads sunday il finish it off in peace ready to post monday, if the paed letter has come. x
