Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Is there a standard sensory needs assessment?

We have been given a 'sensory diet advice' sheet for DS1, based on the observations of the OT at school. Some of the points are valid, but nothing we didn't know before. Some of them don't seem to be about DS at all and contradict all we know about him at home. For instance, she thinks he has a 'low threshold for vestibular input', e.g., doesn't like his feet being off the ground, being upside down, or going on playground equipment. This is a boy who adores being spun around like a pair of Y-fronts in a fast spin cycle on theme park rides I am far to scared to get on!

My SN mum friends say they filled in a four page assessment when their DC's had their sensory needs assessed. I don't remember filling anything in so it seems parental input has been bypassed - yet again.

Is there a standard, comprehensive Sensory Needs assessment out there?

Winnie Dunn (?) is the one we did - quite long and detailed. Think is well known and respected but not sure about standard

I filled out a questionnaire when my ds was assessed. I think it was called The SEnsory Profile School Companion (Dunn). At least this is what it says it was when I looked up my old documentation. The OT asked both us and his teacher to fill it in and then she scored him in different areas.

We did the Dunn sensory profile too

We filled a sensory questionairre in when DD was assessed a few weeks back. I'm not sure what it was called but there were over 100 questions to answer!

I don't know much about profiles, sorry - but I did read somewhere that some sensory issues fluctuate.

The OT may have seen him when he didn't like vestibular movement, perhaps.
