How to find a teaching assistant for a SEN child in private school?

Hello, I would be very grateful for any advice on how to go about finding a SEN teaching assistant to work part-time with the child of a friend. He is in a private school in Surrey and currently has approx 15 hours per week one-to-one support from a TA (who is leaving). As it is a private school the LEA does not (as far as I know) arrange for assistance, and the school does not seem helpful in recommending how to find someone new. Many thanks!

The school should advertise the job as normal, surely? School website, TES, local newspaper...

Wish it was more hours and a bit further south Wink

Agree the school should have someone they can ask or advertise. Surrey LA won't be interested and some private schools may not be either, but if they accommodate him already they have a moral obligation.

The school should advertise it - I presume he has a statement? It's then their responsibility.

I have some experience of the private sector, and it's possible they already have someone in mind for the job - a teacher's adult son/daughter, a parent...

purplepidjin is right unfortunately...also have experience of the private sector
Your friend needs to be on their backs to ensure that whoever is hired has the necessary SEN qualifications and experience

Thanks all for the advice. It's an international school for the children of foreign nationals, so I don't think the Statement and Local Education Authority apply. I believe the current TA is paid by the parents directly, as opposed to employed by the school. Asking the school for help in finding someone who may already have a connection there already is a good idea though. Agree experience is so important, too. Thanks again.

In that case, I would suggest that you put an advert on the Times Educational Supplement website and in the local papers. Make sure the school sorts out the CRB check before they start!! If it was full time hours and a county further south, I'd be tempted Sad
