Silly question of the day.. Reflexes

Okay ds had a paed appointment just before Christmas, where they did the quick height, weight, reflex tapping and the finger on the nose to finger to nose, and the palm up and palm down thing... So all really big standard stuff!

When paed did the reflex tapping she commented that ds's reactions were very fast, almost too much so.
I didn't think any more of it tbh.. Like you don't.

Anyway ds1 had this done a couple of months ago (a+e rather than an appointment as such).. And we were talking about it last night and ds1 said " yeah but ( remember he's a teen and says yeah but a LOT lol).. I had that done and they said mine were too fast as well! And I did the nose to finger to nose thing fast too as the doctor commented on it at the time"

So tell me about this because I haven't a clue.. And didn't know it could be too fast

Could it be a symptom of retained reflexes? i.e. could he still have his baby reflexes instead of his adult reflexes?

I have no idea Blush.. I'm going to ask the pead if I remember next time l.. Weird that both boys do it though... Although ds can't do the palm up palm down thing..( but that's by the by ).

Palm up palm down is also linked to reflexes so may not quite be by the by when taken in conjunction with other reflexes.

TACC look back to indigo's threads about retained reflexes. if reflexes not integrated, could maean poor coordination, poor balance, poor visual perception, crossness. also google for 'difficulties crossing the midline' ie cant read somehting on a blackboard with only moving eyes, ie have to move head as well.

then google for a sensory trained OT who can give you exercises to do (15 mins a day) - takes a while but does help.

Right will do.. Because what's listed is very ds2 ..

Why don't they mention these things when they make these comments!.. Would be blooming helpful.

If you mean tapping the knees, elbows, wrists, ankles etc. these are nothing to do with retained reflexes but are simple tests to elicit the automatic response of the muscles to stimulation at the level of the spinal cord, no message goes to the brain. They can indicate damage or dysfunction of the spinal reflexes, but fast responses and even slow responses are usually nothing to worry about. In unconscious patients for instance, there is usually no response at all.
