Rethink Autism Website for online ABA - Have you tried it??

Hi

I ran across this website before and I really like the look of it. It has hundreds of videos and an easy way to keep track of progress and frankly for £50 a month has got to be one of the cheapest things i've seen for helping with a home programme.

Have any of you used this website and if so what did you think of the set-up and quality of the videos?

We aren't don't a formal ABA programme as we cannot afford it but are doing a home programme with some great help but am wondering if these videos would help us out a bit more with targeting specific areas for our DD.

Here's the link for those of you who haven't heard of it www.rethinkautism.com

Would love your feedback before we invest in a month's subscription, thanks!

I haven't looked at the website but actually I think it is a bit dangerous to blindly follow the guidance of a computer.

Has the 'sylabus' and 'assessment' stuff been properly researched etc.?

I think it is essential to have and independent real life expert checking what you are doing and how.

I might dabble with the idea that the risks of such a package and it's potential pitfalls are still likely to be better than LA provision but then so would pretty much anything that you came up with if it was intensive and with focus.

Also, I think it is a bit expensive. £50 could buy you 4-5 hours or real life tutor/admin person.

PEAT also do one.

But I agree that personal oversight with a supervisor was essential for us, I don;t know how we would have got on with an online version.

Only had a quick look but it has some peopel on board with pretty good credentials.e

Yes it involves a massibe commitment to learning, data collection nad huge self discipline to run something like this as a paparent, even before you try to develop the necessary objectiveness (ie to view the programme almost as a non parent)

I know one of the PEAT people and he ios good.

We do have someone helping us run a home programme and she's fabulous. I didn't want to have the website take over from that, I am just wanting to use the videos as a resource. Especially for DH as he's a much more visual learner whereas i'm the one reading all the stuff we need to know and do IYSWIM.

I'm not worried about their credentials, they are very very good and knowledgeable and I think they're brilliant for bringing at least some option to people who cannot fund a full ABA programme.

Like StartingAfresh says, anything has to be better than the LA stuff LOL! Which in our case has been so inadequate, its almost non-existent...and I live in supposedly a very wealthy area.

I may try the free one week trial and go look specifically at a couple of videos i'm keen to have some direction in.

I found a review of it here www.squidalicious.com/2009/08/aba-affordably-on-demand-rethink-autism.html ... if you do decided to take the trial I'd be interested to hear what you think of it :)

As a parent who is using the website I found it very useful. The videos are easy to follow and there is also a lesson plan for each of the videos. My view is whatever I can do to increase my knowledge it?s worth it. for $69 a month it is the an amazing tool and I am very pleased with the service they are providing. I am familiar with ABA but the visual that they provide is very helpful. I strongly recommend to any parent to use this website.

Eloise73 · 04/01/2011 17:53

Thanks so much for the review link and thank you Melissa for your comments, its great to hear from someone who his using it!

We will do the trial in the next couple of weeks, will come back and let you know what we think :)

melisa123, do you also work or volunteer for rethink autism? I'm really sorry if I am inadvertently offending a previous poster or failing to welcome a newcomer, it's just that your phrasing sounds quite American and the post reads a little like an advertisement.

From what I read on the website it looks like an interesting product, and I'd be really interested to hear more details of how you got started using it with your child. I couldn't find any previous mumsnet posts so I thought I'd just have to ask you straight out.

StartingAfresh · 04/01/2011 22:59

melisa123 Can it help a child who has completed Abylls and VB-Mapp?
