hiya,

I have a DD (2.11) with speech delay. she has loads of words (>200) but does not combine her words. also, I feel her receptive language is behind. have been struggling for 1 year to get her referred for a SALT assessment.

just wondered if I should request a referral for dev. paed. as well? I just worry there is more behind her delayed speech than just a speech delay and it took me already ages to get the SALT referral (and god know when they will see us - we are on the waiting list and no appointments available; they will contact us again when an appointment becomes available Hmm). I feel we have already lost a year and I don't want to waste any more time.

also wondered - is it worth paying for a private Salt? We consider going down that route until help on the NHS becomes available.

thanks :)

I would certainly ask for referral waiting lists are huge. What are you thinking? Asd?

thank lisad123.
i don't really know. asd crossed my mind but really unsure - DD is affectionate, has good eye contact, no obsessions, no repetitive behaviour; great eater (not fussy at all)... though she is a difficult child: tantrums all day long esp when she is trying something and can't manage (e.g. putting a sock onto her doll, which is quite fiddly), she hits the roof straight away(all day, for everything); she is very, very clingy... completely resistant to potty training... but the tantrums all day really started to stress us out.

I personally would get a private SALT assessment in your shoes, if you can afford it and there's no date yet for an NHS appointment. I'm sure you know the website for finding local private SALTs but here is the link just in case.

thanks makatai - have been on the website and already contacted a couple of people :)

If it were me then yes I would get a private SALT assessment and yes I would also push for a paed appointment.

TotalChaos · 03/01/2011 21:41

Yes to both. Also get hearing checked

Go with your gut instincts! we all know our children well enough to know when to be concerned. You can also talk to a speech pathologist at the speechtails website. I have gotten a lot of questions answered there and gotten an assessment. It has been a wonderful help.

Good Luck, Vikki B, Indiana

You do an awful lot of posting all over the world endorsing that site, don't you Vikki B?

Hmm
