Who's getting the swine flu jab?

I don't know what to do. I know carers can get it, but am worried about side-effects, and even more worried about getting it for my sonm because I hate him having any kind of vaccinations. He had the early jabs and then the initial single measles, mumps and rubella jabs but have steered clear of the boosters.

Anyway, what are people thinking of wrt this?

my son had the swine flu jab last year and he was fine with it. dont know if i'd want it myself as i have never had any flu jabs and some people do get flu like symptoms with it. i dont have time to be ill :)

FanjoForTheMincePies · 29/12/2010 07:53

I had it, Felt like I was coming down with a cold for a day or two, that was it.

Wish DD was getting is, she hasn't been offered it and has a serious egg allergy.

glittery · 29/12/2010 08:24

we both had the SF jab last year and were fine with it but our surgery has said it isnt being done seperately this year and is combined in with the seasonal flu jab so ds cant have it as its got egg in!
they said they arent doing the Celvapan egg free one he had last year but i can have the combined one if i want.

FanjoForTheMincePies · 29/12/2010 08:26

So there is no egg free one? That's awful!

Both me and my two DC with ASD have had it this year and last - no reaction and all well.

borderslass · 29/12/2010 10:15

I got offered the flu jab and told them no I get some form of flu every year but don't trust the jabs.

woolyxmastree · 29/12/2010 11:39

Im stuck with this one :( ...I dont trust jabs but my step daughters best friend died from swine flu and her unborn baby...was so very sad she was very young.

We all just had a flu like bug for two weeks just before xmas, made me rethink the issue again. Still undecided.

starfishmummy · 29/12/2010 13:18

We have them every year.
Last year we had the separate flu and swine flu jabs. Ds was fine but my arm went red and sore from the swine flu but recovered in a few days.
This year combined vaccinations - no problems

debating about ds2.
He is asthmatic, mild cp, autism etc.
He is pretty strong at the moment and his chest has been good lately but being ex prem with lung damage I'm guessing if he got a bad dose of flu it could be serious??
GP was no bloody help, just said its recommended for anyone who is eligible but its up to us -

TheArsenicCupCake · 29/12/2010 16:52

I've litterally just had the flu... Really flu.. It started two weeks ago... Knocked me totally flat in bed, actually couldn't move and I'm still not over it.. Everytime I get up and do anything I'm wiped out again!

The sickness ( d&V) and the cough that comes with it is awful! And I would honestly say.. If your dc's have any type of underlying health issues I would go for the jab!.. Just because it's is awful! ( I'm pretty fit and healthy and honestly I managed to go out to the shops today for an hour... That's two weeks after it started... And I'm done in!).

If dh wasn't able to take time off work and ds1 wasn't almost 16 and useful.. There is no way I could have cared for the two younger dc's!

Rivan .. Dsis had epilepsy (a complication from brain surgery and her main condition).. And no matter how bad I say the flu is.. There is no way I would have said for dsis to have any jab because of her seizures!

I think tbh it's a different kettle of fish!

anonandlikeit · 29/12/2010 17:38

I can understand, in your situation Riven I would probably come to the same decision

badkitty · 29/12/2010 17:47

DS and I both had it recently, absolutely no side effects at all, no temperature, cold symptoms or anything. Very relieved we have got it out of the way.

My DD had (i'm pretty sure) swine flu, high fever 4-5 days, sore throat, cough, D&V and took ages to get over it pre christmas. DGS (2) managed to get minor cough and snotty nose Confused Don't understand it as he has CP and is underweight??

I did briefly read in one of our endless stream of emails that children 6 months - 5 who had Pandermix (SW.F)2010/2011 only needed flu jab with no SW.F in it?? Not clear why but am wondering if he was covered still?

Nevertheless am still nagging DD and her DH to have flu vaccine to protect DGS as he doesnt go to nursery so minimal contact with bugs. Both front line NHS staff so should have had ages ago!!!

TotalChaos · 29/12/2010 21:15

I have had jab as work in nhs tho not frontline, i would not have ds have the jab tho.

5inthebed · 29/12/2010 21:19

I had the flu a few weeks ago, similar to TACC, and I'm debating whether to get it myself or not.

No way I'd let DS2 have it though, despite him having all his immunisations.

sneezecakesmum · 29/12/2010 21:40

Swine Flu is really nasty, worse than everyday flu, and thats bad enough. DD was tatally wiped like TACC, went back to work for a day (12 hour busy shift) and next day needed several hours sleep to recover!

It is also the predominant flu bug going round as was forecast last winter, if youve escaped so far I would def have it.

If you cant bear DCs having it, get it yourself (my GP will do it for carers of SN) as poor DD was completely unable to care for DGS and DH had to take time off work. I had the flu jab and nought but a sore arm.

meltedmarsbars · 29/12/2010 21:45

Dd2 has had the jab - she is so vulnerable to complications from chest infections, pneumonia, etc, that flu would polish her off completely. That is our worry, anyway.

I wasn't offered it, but rarely get ill anyway.

As Sneezecake says, it is really nasty and more widespread than last year.

nightmarebeforechristmas · 29/12/2010 22:16

dd had it last year (the jab) but has refused point blank this year to have the flu one, so no chance
