Wondered if any one else had experience of this?

Ds had an x-ray yesterday. One of his thigh bones is virtually straight with the ball on top and a very shallow hip socket.

Person we saw mentioned surgery.

As far as I understand it that would be to ensure that he remains active, sitting independently (has really deteriorated recently), prevents spine misalignments (we hope) and contractures (we hope).

But it's obviously a major major op and a horrendous thing to put him through.

Wondered if anyone else has experience of this and what they thought the pros and cons were and what they decided to do.

Also understand before- and after-care hugely important, but not very clear on what that would entail other than cast and specialist seating and standing frame. Worried whether he'd actually get that as well given our experiences to date and whether that would affect the outcome so much that it would make the operation too much to ask.

If that makes sense.

Would love your views. Seems like it's one thing after another at the moment. Thanks.

how old is your ds?
what is the op they have mentioned?
he will have hip precaution to abide to for at least 3 months, in which case you need all the equipment in place before the op.

He'll be 4 this w/end.

No name (didn't think to ask) for op but involves rebuilding bone in correct position (cutting and pinning).

hI

Sounds like a salters or a pembertons procedure, also could be femoral osteotomy but basically you are right remodelling the joint and shortening the femoral head to ensure sits properly in joint.

as you said is to prevent pain through joint damage and arthritis when older and to ensure remains active.

sorry don't have any experience to share re this op but if you go to STEPS charity they have a discussion forum on hip problems ( named ddh/cdh) where lots of people have had this op and would be able to tell you more re the cast and equipment etc

Ooo good luck.

Not sure on % dislocation. But barely in socket at all. Thickness of bone between bone and socket so that ball against lip of socket.
