DS1 had his initial appointment with the Paed in August. She said he was definately on the spectrum, probably Aspergers and she would refer him for a joint assessment with SALT, OT and physio. She would also observe him at school. DS1 is 4 and in reception.
We got an appointment with SALT on her own who said his speech was fine but his language was very functional. She's going to observe him at school and look into how he can be supported. She also said the school should apply for funding for him.
Paed did her school assessment and basically said he was no different to the other children in his class and he was interacting with the other children. She is going to see him in clinic in Feb
Then this week I got a letter from the SENCO saying this is your child's IEP, please sign it and give one copy back to the school (we keep the other copy). The IEP says that DS1 doesn't interact with other children and his target for next term is to initiate 10 conversations with another child. I didn't even know he had an IEP! It also says EY/SA on it, does anyone know what that means?
So now I'm confused about whether he has SN or not. I'm wondering if his behaviour is sometimes hidden because home is already a very AS friendly enviroment because DH has AS so we all talk fairly literally, obsessions are seen as normal and we never do anything spontaneously. We have asked the teachers to be careful about what language they use and to let us know in advance if anything unusual is happening eg if lessons are disrupted for nativity rehearsals. I'm also wondering if the Paed is just trying to be positive. Some of DS2's professionals are like that and say he's fine. I just think to myself just say he is making progress because if you tell me that DS2 is fine when he is not walking at 2.5 it just makes me think you are an idiot.
