is it something that a child would have from an early age or can it start later in a previously ok child, such as age 10 or 11?

Its something you are born with but things such as stress or change could make traits more noticable. Also girls are good at hiding some traits as they are more sociable and will cover up traits/copy others behaviour to be excepted socialy. Some children are not diagnossed until they are older. With dd1 she was different from day 1, she was a very unsettled baby, hated being touched or talked too by strangers and would never settle (would not sleep for more then an hour).

Ds2 was always a bit .. Different.. A bit quirky.. I was calling him my quirky one before I even knew anything about asd or aspergers.
He was overly quiet.. He named objects before saying mummy etc
hated being held normally and would arch his back so he was away from people.. Overly quiet.. He was too easy as a baby.
Play was a bit strange tbh.. Always working parts of things. ( he was my little engineer!)

earlyschool reports actually highlighted his issues.. But.. It was always a bit here and there and no one picked up on anything as a whole.

It wasn't until school became overwhelming that he eventually got picked up!

But I say this as I can look back with hindsight!

There has been increasing awareness of Autism and Aspergers over the last ten years. They say that more boys have it than girls, but, as someone above says, maybe when girls have it it is not as obvious as in boys.
