when does spinning descend into something that should be stopped?

dd2 loves to spin. always has done.

hasnt done it for ages though. until recently. she has been doing it more.

she is always twirly and hoppy, but now she is spinning again.

when is it 'just' spinning, and when is it stimming?

Ds2 still spins.. He does it to gain sensory input.. Plus he does it when he's stressed ( supermarkets are fun:))

with Christmas coming up we are seeing more flapping and spinning..
We always do.. He's 12.. So I don't know when it stops..

Just wondering if the whole Christmas mayhem windup might be the cause of your spinning return ?

misdee · 09/12/2010 21:41

i think it is.

its been pretty full on at school with play rehersals, choir, and parties.

she was very tearful at school today.

have video clip of her spinning, just uploading it, but its take ages. she stops when she sees me filming, but had been doing it for a fair while before i started filming.

dd2 hasnt been in a supermarket for about a year. its deadly enough taking her round town as she walks into people, and cuts them up. she almost got run over by a cyclist recently as well (what they were doing on the pavement is beyond me though)

Dd2 loves spinning, if i tell her to 'stop' she spins faster and giggles until she falls over, she seems to do it more when she's really excited or stressed.

misdee · 09/12/2010 21:42

video it finished uploading when i was typing.

Gah I can't see the vid as I'm on my phone.. But I'll look in the morning on the pc

ds just loves spinning so much! We let him go on a gravity wheel at butlins duringthe summer.. We couldn't get him off! when he eventually didcome off it ( after 5 goes in a row) he just flapped at us with the biggest grin on his face!

misdee · 09/12/2010 22:15

oh i think she would love those wheel things.

me, i cant stand to spin, cant even look at anyone spinning as it makles me feel sick.

You know.. If she is using it to destress .. Particularly at this time of year.. I would just direct her to a safe space to get on with it.. If it continues when things calm down in the new year.. Then I'd look at distracting or limiting.

Ds loves bouncing too .. He has a space hopper, a gymball and a wobble cushion.. Which does decrease the spinning :)

misdee · 09/12/2010 22:19

she is missing the trampoline. i dismantled it whilst the pups are at their manic chewing stage

I am soooo glad we are not in the puppy stage!

What about a wooden balance board.. They are pretty chunky and would probably put up with a bit of puppy chewing going on ?

misdee · 09/12/2010 22:32

i remember ELC used to sell those. think i'll have a look.

she just needs constant exercise (a bit like a puppy lol) and is finding things hard atm with the weather and is tired as well. cant wait till i get my energy back once bubs is born, and we can go on long puppy walks again. she loves going with me. but been taking the dogs out when the girls are at school.

Indoor puppy proof jumping bouncing spinning.. Go for it.. !

Dds friends that come to play love the fact that we have a bouncy house :)

misdee · 09/12/2010 22:50

might have a bid on this

DS2 has been spinning more lately as well. I agree that it's most likely the chaos in the run up to Christmas. He's been edgy and easily ends up in tears over the smallest things - things that normally would not upset him nearly as much. He's off his food again and just off kilter all the time right now. It started right about the time that the school started doing a bunch of assemblies and such in preparation for the nativity play.

I love Christmas, but up until this year he wasn't in school, so it was easy to kind of keep things a bit low key. When he's in school all day, he just ends up on overload.

Misdee, we have one of those wobble boards and both boys (ds1 8 ASD and ds2, 6, NT) love it.

The only thing I would say is, that its quite easy to do, which is fine if its just to fulfil the need for movement rather than to be used as an actual balance workout iyswim.

I'm just about to buy one of the cheaper balance boards with a ball/soft middle, as despite having very little coordination or balance, ds1 still manages to do really well at the electronic one. Its quite noisy too, which is a pita if its raining or snowing outside.

Ds1 has been spinning this week and he hasn't done it for years. We've always had a no spinning in the house rule, because we live in a tiny house and it just gets dangerous, but he can't seem to stop himself at the moment. I'm fairly sure its down to pre-christmas hysteria and disruption at school.

Roll on the holidays and a few pj days to bring them back down to earth.
