Help without a diagnosis

I need help. Not only for myself but for my DS and the rest of the family. DS is almost 11years old. No diagnosis yet but probably Aspergers with a Processing disorder. His behaviour is really bad. I have to physically restrain him at times to stop him hitting me. I end up in tears and feel really inadequate as a mother. My 7yr old DD is really frightened when he "kicks off". DH is supportive but he is at a loss as well. Just need to know i'm not a complete failure. No family near by for much needed support. No one wants to help us without a diagnosis. Any ideas?

If it were me I would go to your GP and request a referrel to GOSH-you need a diagnosis before you'll get much help....we have been fighting for years and are still fighting now.....we won't give up.

Is there an Autism support group in your area ? I think the national society has a network. Keep pressing for a paediatrician to diagnose properly so you can access better support. Does he have a statement ?

Hethbell - PM me. I can send you some strategies to try.

Streaky - i hope you've asked the big guy in the red and white suit for a lot this year - because you've been a very, very good girl and he should give you everything!
Hethbell - please don't store all your faith in thinking that a diagnosis will be the answer. Some info and organisations give you help without a dx anyway. Try your GP (definitely ask for a referral) and ask school nurse/ SENco for help and advice. I know some are like chocolate teapots, but sometimes they can mention an organisation, local group etc that can make a difference.
There was a post on here not that long back that so many people put contacts for different information that they found without being told by any professional. I know it was suggested then that there should be a permanent link to this page, so that everyone could make use of the info that was on it. Hopefully someone might have a link to that page for you.
Keep on down the referral route, but get support if you can now - and no, you are not a failure, your a caring concerned parent trying to make a difference.
