Well, in our case with dd1 it was that she was out of step with her peers but they could not pin down what the issue was. She was very anxious, literal and routine driven, but very obviously not on the AS. It was only as she got older and could engage more fully with the testing that it became apparent she has problems with attention. Girls with ADD who do not have the hyperactivity element are the most undiagnosed group, because they sit quietly in a dream but don't misbehave.

Once we had dd1's diagnosis, it was much easier for dd2 because the genetic links with these conditions is well known. Also dd2 is so hyperactive, it was pretty obvious early on!
The process of diagnosis and help does take time, though. With dd1, it was 4 years from initial concerns being raised at school to a diagnosis. In our case, the teacher had some concerns, as did we as parents. The school SENCo then did some initial testing to see where she was in relation to her peers and then developed programs to help her at school. She then had 2 assessments by an Ed Psych, the first in year 1 and the second in year 3 when we had the ADD diagnosis. We then had to be referred to a specialist paediatrician for ongoing management.
