Dyspraxia - any useful advice?

Finally had DS diagnosed with Dyspraxia (age10) after years of telling us his problems were being an August baby, immature, lazy, overly emotional etc. etc. Waiting for OT appointment. School OK with IEP & some help but would really like advice from others on help with handwriting. Very bright boy, in the top set for everything (except English)but struggling to record work. Has poor grip, hand cant keep up with speed of thought. Has anyone used things like writing slopes, any exercises, practice sheets etc & has any advice on how we can help him? Fights over homework driving me to madness!

We tried a writing slope and a number of different type of pens etc with limited degrees of success, before we managed persuaded ds's primary to let him use an Alphasmart. This reduced some of the pressure on him when it came to writing.

Alternatively is it possible that your school could give him access to a laptop for literacy?

You could try a Yoro pen, these are shaped to allow the child to see what they are writing, as they are writing it. www.leftshoponline.co.uk/yoro-pencil-pink-barrelhb.ir?cName=penspencils-yoro-penspencils

Thanks Minx. I'll look at the links. School have said a laptop maybe possible but they want to try harder with writing first. They have offered intervention after Xmas; taking him out of French to do 1-2-1 sessions on his handwriting. I'll look at the pens as well.
Cheers

Maybe try Speed Up and nightly OT exercises to strengthen his hands, his shoulders, and his core (tummy) muscles.

my 11 year old son has dyspraxia he always uses pencil grips and has to have his feet planted on the floor. my son had 4 years of OT support where they did exercises to strengthen his core and very weak shoulder muscles we also do them at home.squishing playdoe, writting with a finger in sand all help improve fine motor skills.eventually OT have said hes had very little improvement and writting is always going to be a struggle so now he has his use of his own laptop at school for a majority of lessons.

Pink - did he strengthen his fingers / shoulders / core and his handwriting was still terrible - or was he not able to strengthen his fingers / shoulders / core?
