ds 3, starts school next sep. he'll be 4.0.

he's still not diagnosed but we all think asd and adhd.

today i visited a communication and interaction centre which is everything i could wish for.

they only take up to 10 pupils per key stage. they have experienced, dedicated staff who have obviously chosen to work with asd children. they also do some intergration with the outstanding ofsted rated school they share grounds with. they have loads of visial aids and makaton. have aspeech therapist in 2.5 days a week, o.t in too.
they take the children horseriding once a week, they also take the children to soft play once a week and sensory room at the towns special needs school.
they do cooking every thursday too.
they also said they'll be a taxi to take ds each day and bring him back if he gets in.
if ds went there i could actually picture him happy, safe and with a chance of learning. he is actually really bright but finds it hard to focus in busy classrooms of 30. he goes into a sensory overload.

awaiting ed psychs final assessment on 1 dec so applying for a statement then.

ds also sees salt and advisory teacher. seeing salt tomorrow so will get her on board then. rang ed psych earlier. he is new to area so not familiar with the centre. he did say he would write in his report that i like it and am considering it as a place for ds. i know the advisory teacher finds it a fantastic place and speaks highly of it so i think i should get her on my side.

anything else i can do? can honestly envisage a much brighter and optimistic future if ds gets in.

many thanks.

I would visit other types of provision the LEA might consider and quietly make a list of why they are unsuitable. Also make a list of the reasons why the school you want can meet his needs. This way when you do name the school you want you will be able to say why only this school can meet your ds' needs and why others are totally unsuitable.

A Statement will probably be the entry ticket.

thanks. applying for statement after ed psych's final report. he is seeing ds again on 1st dec. have salt, advisory teacher, pre school and old nursery supporting a statement. am off to visit our 2 local schools which are good schools tomo and next tues. will also makee an apt to visit local special school so i can say i have checked out all other schools. i know it's the place where ds can actually get the support and education he needs and deserves.
i just hope the lea will accept.
do i put in with my request for a statement that this is where i want him to go?

When you request an assessment that might lead to a Statement you shold state the reasons why you are requesting it - but I wouldn't go as far as to name the school you want in the request.

That comes later after the assessment has discovered his difficulties and what support he needs. The school is then the place that can support those needs.

You may find that the current school initiate the request for Statement - if not I'd get it in as soon as you can.
