what would you put in Sensory room?

I guess not a complete sensory room, but more like somewhere for DDs to chill out away from it all. I have 2 lava lamps and one of those electric dome thingies, and a set of traffic light. Will put in a stero and some large flat bean bags. The PC will have to stay in other end.
What elese should we put in? Its all going to have to be fairly cheap as no real funds, just whats left from DLA after playing private SN school. TIA

p.s how about sand or liquid timers? my ds loves those or similar types of thing where dc can watch the liquid/sand in motion.

if you want lights, now's the perfect time to get some, shops are full of rope lights and colour changing lights at the moment. I got dd3 a rope light from asda and a string of colour changing disco ball type lights. How about some cushions with different textured covers.

Hi Lisa, i'm interested too. I'm trying to create a really relaxing bedroom for my DS.

I have just bought a big lava lamp and a glitter ball for my DSs room. I put a lavender oil diffuser in there to try and help with sleep issues.

I'm no expert so I might be buying the wrong things but I bought this and DS liked watching it.

Have posted loys of wanted messages on freecycle for a bubble tube, the bubble tube thread inspired me!

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 21/11/2010 16:03

oh theres a Maplins in my town might have to pop there.

these dones are reduced to £5 each here BARGAIN!

good idea about rope lights, I know normally B&Q do 75% off after christmas so will wait it out for them :)

Anyone seen a cheap bubble tube? Only one i know is in argos and its always out of stock!!

bubble machine would be great for dd2, think i will make some material baskets for them, especially dd2 who is a sensory seeker.

Anymore ideas??

Does my link go to the home page? It was supposed to link to a laser cube which puts red stars on the wall. It has shooting stars, very nice.

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 21/11/2010 16:29

yes it went to lazer light, looks fab :)

Not sure if ot will help but I'll list ds2s things.. ( although he's a bit older).

Ikea hanging seat ( it's fabric and we have it with some cushions in the bit where the blow up cushion should go, because it's too small otherwise.. And this way it 'holds' him .. Even at 8 stone and just over 5'2")

a gym ball.. We also have that jigsaw foam flooring that supposed to go under weight machines.
A space hopper. ( can you see a bouncing theme yet lol).
Sand and liquid timers.
Some hangy spinny things for gardens and a bamboo wind chime.
A fiddle bag with all sorts of things.. Those magnet chime things, squidgey balls, sponges of different textures and a fleece blanket that I've sewn different fabrics on to ( he like to stroke stuff).
Lavender filled bean toys. ( a smell that he actually likes). A sponge woopee cushion and a blow up one.
Basically I raided Hawkins bazzare lots in there for good prices.

He also has a pin art and a thumping cushion ( punch bag died and was too big really).

A wobble board and a wobble cushion. And some large cuddly toys that he adores.
And a sleeping bag.

Phew!

How big is the room? A little pop up tent can cost under a tenner and some kids like the womb-like cosiness of them. You could hang things from the ceiling and have lights shining through the fabric, or different coloured torches and fake fur on the floor, or even a ball pool in it.

Just a word of warning, some of those cheap rope lights - lovely for sensory areas - are a fire hazard. I know someone who nearly set her child's room on fire with them as they started to burn a cushion

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 21/11/2010 17:07

room is not very big, size of a shed i would say.
great ideas, not sure if we can have swing seat, but will check beams :)

Ds has a small space for that lot ( hense we have the fiddle bag which keeps a lot in a small space!
Biggest things are the space hopper and gym ball .. But it fits okay.. Our hanging seat is bolted into the ceiling beam okay ( pain in the bum job though!)

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 21/11/2010 17:16

think a trip to ikea might be in order :)

Something on the ceiling, ds2 loves laying flat on his back & staring up!
Obviously I don't knoW your dd but for ds2 we would ahve to keep it very simple & minimal & amybe alternate stuff rather than having everything out at once as he would be just too overwhelmed with too many lights & too much stuff & end up sitting in the corner sniffing his hand.

So maybe don't overdo it IYKWIM.
